Will the Nexon CNG ever match its electric SUV counterparts in the long run?

With the automobile industry turning towards electrification at warp speed, there are many who believe electric vehicles will hold sway over the market in the decades to come. Against this backdrop, the Nexon CNG presents some questions of longevity. CNG may still be a cleaner fuel than petrol or diesel, but it still is a fuel sourced from a fossil fuel. On the other hand, while electric vehicles emit zero tailpipe pollution and are becoming more inexpensive and practical, we still lack sufficient public services to easily employ them. Part of government policies are also heavily biased in favor of EVs in many countries, including India. While it’s not without its advantages: quicker refueling times, more developed infrastructure in some areas. The debate is over whether the Nexon CNG is a smart intermediary step towards cleaner mobility or if it's already obsolete technology in a world running towards electrification. Will CNG vehicles like the Nexon make sense in the market five or ten years from now or are they to be merely a short lived one off buy?

It's all about the economics. In fact, if CNG continues to be cheaper than petrol and electricity by a large factor — and it surely does — that is still a market for it — the cab and the fleet operators high mileage users.

Hybrid technology, let’s not forget. And I think that plug in hybrids actually may be more of a threat to CNG in the medium term. It’s the best of both worlds: they’re electric to use daily but they have petrol when you want to go for a long journey.

I say Tata's smart to offer CNG now. Sure EVs are coming but it will take time. Today, eco conscious buyers have a Nexon CNG as an option, while Tata works on developing their EV tech.

In fact, some areas, CNG might have an advantage. So it’s much easier to setup CNG station in remote areas as compared to EV charger. CNG will be a viable solution for quite some time for people in those regions.

That depends on how quickly EV infrastructure develops. If it became as common as putting fuel in the car, CNG wouldn’t stand a chance. But, if that doesn't come any time soon, the Nexon CNG is going to have a decent run.

There is room for both, I think. CNG has its advantages (quick refueling and lower upfront costs) but are EVs even better? CNG could be a good alternative for years to come because not everyone can afford, or even charge, an EV.

No way. CNG is just a stopgap, and EVs are the future. The Nexon CNG would look old tech, and in 5 years we should have affordable electric SUVs with 500km range.
