What do modern Alfa Romeos have in common with the 8C?

Alfa Romeo's past comes alive with the very rare Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione build from 2007 to 2010. It was a supercar that was only available in limited production, and showed what the brand could do when it went all in. Forward to today and while Alfa Romeo’s range has changed quite a bit – there’s the Giulia sedan and Stelvio SUV among others – it’s also one that has struggled to increase sales. It's the driving dynamics and style these modern Alfas are praised for, but they're mass market vehicles, not exclusive supercars. Some of the 8C's design influence lingers on but the overall philosophy is different. It makes you wonder just how the 8C’s legacy fits into Alfa’s identity today, and if the spirit of the 8C lives on in its modern cars. In this post, let's compare the 8C to the Alfas of today, in terms of performance, design and overall brand positioning.

It’s in a league of its own. They’re playing a different game now, modern Alfas are great, but they’re not even playing the same game.

I think cars like the Giulia Quadrifoglio actually out perform the 8C in many ways. They are just as thrilling, and more usable.

The 8C was a statement piece. Alfas are trying to compete, but in a tough market. Both approaches have merit.

The design of the Giulia is an extension of the spirit of the 8C. They basically took the 8C's DNA and made it more accessible.

The 8C is a better Alfa, if that makes sense, but the modern Alfas are better cars. They represent the brand's passion in a way the new ones cannot.

So the modern Alfas could run, the 8C walked. That put the brand back on the map and opened the door for the great cars they are making today.

I miss the V8. The modern turbo engines are impressive but nothing compares to that 8C engine.

The new Alfas are probably better to live with day to day, but the 8C feels more special. It's a trade-off.

The 8C was a halo car. Alfas of today are great, but they don't have that ultimate flagship to aspire to. They need a new 8C!
