The Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder’s hybrid system: Is it worth the extra cost?
The Hyryder is available in mild hybrid and strong hybrid variants with a large price gap between the two. In city driving conditions, the strong hybrid promises better fuel efficiency. But it’s a premium price point. The long term benefits and environmental impact (or lack thereof) may not justify the higher upfront cost, some argue, while others believe the fuel savings do. Drive Cycle: What cities or interstates will you be driving on? How frequently will you be charging? Will you be towing with your vehicle—if so how much and how often? Towing provokes a different driving pattern than hauling one or two small kids around. All these variables can affect how often you charge and when—and therefore, the overall cost per miles. It also relates to the complexity of the hybrid system and long term maintenance costs.
Absolutely worth it! In my strong hybrid, I have been getting 28 kmpl consistently. With today’s prices, the fuel savings really do add up quickly.
It depends on your usage. If you’re going to be mostly highway driving, the mild hybrid might be a better value. In stop and go traffic, the strong hybrid is a shining star.
I'd say no. The price difference is just too much and you can get a lot of great features on the top end mild hybrid for much less money.
But it’s not just a cost saving for me. The lower emissions and smoother ride of the strong hybrid are worth it.
At first I was skeptical, but after 6 months of owning one I am convinced. And it's so quiet in EV mode, and the fuel efficiency is real.
Also don’t forget about potential maintenance costs down the line. Repairing out of warranty of hybrid systems can be complex and expensive.
I find it to be overpriced for what you are receiving. That price difference could be put into a good mutual fund and you might even come out ahead.
