The Royal Enfield Sherpa 350: Will its smaller engine hamper it from becoming the go to tourer in India or could it ride to the top?
The conversation around the introduction of the Royal Enfield Sherpa 350 in India has been around its suitability for long distance touring. The lighter weight and potentially more fuel efficient engine may make it perfect for an extended trip, especially over India’s varied road conditions, some riders argue. A few argue the 350cc engine may have trouble on the highways or when packed with touring gear. Additionally, the debate focuses on the bike's comfort over long distances, its ruggedness on different types of terrain and how it compares to larger bikes that were designed for rough weather use. Fuel range, luggage capacity and reliability on long journeys is taken into consideration. Some riders are also talking about how the Sherpa 350 could fit into the rising trend of budget motorcycle touring in India.
There is no way the Sherpa 350 will be the go to touring bike. It's just too small. In India you need at least a 500cc for comfortable highway cruising.
The 350 is being underestimated. On Indian roads, it's plenty, and the lighter weight will make it easier to handle in city traffic and on bad roads. Better fuel efficiency also equals rides between fill ups.
I think it’d be great for touring. You don’t have to go at 120km/h. If you wanted relaxed scenic routes, the Sherpa could be perfect.
Size isn't everything when it comes to the engine. It could be a great tourer if RE gives it good ergonomics and a comfy seat. But most Indian tourers aren’t crossing continents to do it.
That’s all about the right tool for the job. The Sherpa might be the perfect bike for solo touring, or light two up trips. But it’s when you start piling it with heavy luggage that you might wish you had more power.
Don't forget reliability. If the Sherpa turns out to be bulletproof, that alone could make it a popular touring choice. Breakdowns ruin a trip.
It should appeal to budget tourers and beginners, I reckon. If you are getting into motorcycle touring and want to do it without breaking the bank, this is a great starting point.
