The Royal Enfield Roadster 450 – is it just a naked Himalayan or does it have its own identity?
The Roadster 450 (aka Guerrilla 450) is the latest in a growing list of Royal Enfields in the 450cc range, following the Himalayan adventure bike. The bikes share the same 452cc liquid cooled engine but have different riding styles in mind. The Himalayan is an off road machine while the Roadster is made for city riding with twisty roads in mind. Royal Enfield is recycling parts to make new models, some people say, while others view it as smart platform sharing. The question is whether the Roadster 450 has enough unique features and character to separate itself from its adventure oriented sibling, or if it’s simply a stripped down Himalayan trying to appeal to a different crowd.
It's definitely its own bike. It features a completely different frame, suspension setup and ergonomics. Just because it has the same engine doesn’t mean it’s a naked Himalayan.
I disagree, it feels like RE is just trying to squeeze as much as its 450 platform. Essentially the same bike underneath, with the changes mostly cosmetic.
They feel very different to someone who has ridden both. The Roadster is much more nimble and much better suited for city riding. You’re comparing apples and oranges.
I think RE using same engine in different bikes is smart. That keeps costs down and provides additional options. The Roadster does have its own character.
It's a parts bin special, let's be real. That's not necessarily a bad thing, though. This is a proven engine in a more road focused package. Nothing wrong with that.
The naked Himalayan is way more than the Roadster. It’s a completely different riding position, feel, and handling. It’s like saying sportbike and a cruiser are the same thing because they both have two wheels.
I see it as a win-win. That’s good for RE as they get to expand their lineup cost efficiently and we get a great engine in a more street oriented package. And it’s different enough to be justified.
