The loyal fanbase of Discover 150 Disc, then why did Bajaj discontinue it?
Riders who found the Bajaj Discover 150 Disc to be a good balance between performance, comfort and affordability were a loyal lot. However, for some reason or another, Bajaj decided to call it quits on this model and left countless fans wondering and unhappy. This decision has led to a discussion on Bajaj's product strategy, market trends and Indian motorcycle buyer's preferences. Some say it happened because of the cannibalization in Bajaj’s own lineup, while others blame changing emission norms or changing consumer taste. The discontinuation also leaves mid range commuter bikes in an increasingly polarized market where entry level and premium segments are both growing at the expense of the middle ground. So let's look into what might have lead to this decision and what it means for the future of bikes of this sort in the Indian market.

Bajaj may have pushed too hard with premiumization and it may have been the Discover that was the victim. Instead they seem to be concentrating more on their partnership with KTM and higher end Pulsars. The Discover just didn't fit with this new image they're trying to build.

I believe it was a mistake by Bajaj. The Discover was popular for a reason, it was reliable, efficient and affordable. By cutting it, they’re creating a hole in their lineup that their competitors will be glad to plug.

I had to admit that the competition had caught up, as much as I loved my Discover. There are bikes like Honda SP 125 and TVS Raider which give similar features for similar price. And Bajaj probably knew they had to go back to the drawing board.

It's a sign of the times. As far as commuter bikes go, even younger riders want more style and features. Discover, while practical, was looking a little dated. It appears that Bajaj decided that more modern designs were better.

I don't believe it was discontinued because it wasn't popular enough. More likely, Bajaj wanted to get people to upgrade to newer models with more features. It was too good for the price point of the Discover, and they couldn’t justify upgrading it without raising the price substantially.

It's simple economics. These mid range bikes have razor thin profit margins and with rising costs due to BS6 norms it probably wasn’t viable anymore. It’s only Bajaj following the money to where the market is headed — entry and premium segments.

Bajaj shot themselves in the foot by having too many models in the same segment, I think. To streamline their lineup, they probably axed the Discover 150 because it was eating into their Pulsar range sales. Classic case of brand cannibalization.
