The Discover 125M's petal disc brake, for example, is it really going to make a difference, or is it just for show?
Bajaj made a big deal of a petal disc brake on the Discover 125M, saying that it would improve heat dissipation and braking performance. Visually, it's an eye catching feature that separates it from many of its competitors in its class. Riders are divided, however, as to whether it actually gives a marked improvement in stopping power or feel over a standard disc or a well tuned drum brake. There's praise for the responsiveness and for others it's too much for a 125cc commuter. The other question is long term durability and maintenance costs. Is this a real performance upgrade, a clever bit of marketing, or a little bit of both?
It's a game-changer! The stopping power is much better than my old drum brake Splendor.
To be honest, I can't tell much difference from a regular disc. It looks cooler, but that’s about it.
It’s not just about stopping power. The more consistent performance on longer rides is due to the fact that the petal design dissipates heat better.
It’s great until you need to replace it. Regular petal discs are cheaper than the more expensive ones, and not all shops sell them.
I believe it is overkill for a 125cc commuter. A good drum brake would be fine and keep the price down.
The difference is real, but subtle. The brake feel is definitely more progressive, it’s not going to blow your mind, but it’s definitely more progressive.
It’s mostly for looks, let’s be real. If it means that more people will choose a bike with a disc brake, it’s a win for safety, but hey.
