The Discover 125 ST’s monoshock rear suspension vs dual shocks.
One of the first bikes in its segment to have monoshock rear suspension, Bajaj called it a premium feature. As a result, debates began on the pros and cons of monoshock versus traditional dual shock absorbers on small displacement bikes. Fans of the monoshock praise it for its stability and smoother ride through rougher roads. Some think dual shocks are more durable and easier to maintain. We also talk about if the monoshock makes any noticeable difference to handling for everyday riding. Is the Discover 125 ST's monoshock the real deal or just a marketing gimmick? Let's hear from riders who have ridden both suspension types on similar bikes.
I've ridden both the Discover 125 ST and its dual shock predecessor and I can assure you the monoshock makes a difference. The smoothness is quite noticeable, especially while riding over little bumps and potholes. In corners it feels more planted. It's a nice upgrade for a budget bike.
I honestly don’t believe that a 125cc commuter needs a monoshock. For sure it looks cool, but I didn’t notice a huge difference in everyday riding versus my old dual shock bike. And when it finally needs to be replaced it will be more expensive than simple dual shocks.
In theory, monoshock is great, but Bajaj’s implementation on the Discover 125 ST is terrible. It’s too softly sprung, and as such it’s a bouncy ride with a pillion or on rough roads. I had it retuned in the end, which worked, but a good set up of dual shocks would have worked just as well.
I do a lot of pothole dodging in the city so the monoshock is appreciated. The small stuff soaks up really well and my commute is more comfortable. Is it revolutionary? No. It’s a nice feature to have and separates the bike from other 125cc options.
While improved ride quality is the primary reason for the monoshock, that extra suspension travel also imparts more progressive suspension action for better handling. The Discover 125 ST feels more confident than you’d expect from a budget 125 on twisty roads. It won't make it a sportbike, but it's a noticeable improvement.
