So, why does the Bajaj Platina 100 ES seem to divide owners right down the middle?
It seems as though the Bajaj Platina 100 ES is a bike that people either love or hate, with not much in between. However, some owners swear by its reliability and fuel efficiency, and call it the perfect commuter for Indian roads. Others say the cars are poorly built, frequently break down, and are ultimately very disappointing. What’s interesting about this divide in opinions is that this is a very simple, straightforward commuter bike. The variation here is not surprising, with not only differing quality controls but also different buyer expectations, as well as the bike’s place in the market. So it isn’t a bad idea to explore why a basic commuter model generates such strong and diverse opinions and what it says about Indian motorcycle market and consumer expectations.
I think it’s all about expectations. The Platina is great if you’re looking for a no frills efficient commuter. If you expect anything more, you'll be disappointed.
Bajaj has an inconsistent quality control, and that’s why it has a polarizing reputation. There are some bikes that are rock solid reliable, others are lemons from day one. It's like a lottery.
The thing is, people hate on the Platina because it’s not “cool.” It’s perfect for daily commuters who just want to get from A to B cheaply. Not every bike needs to have status.
It’s a love hate thing: people who take care of their bikes love it, people who don’t take care of their bikes hate it. Lazy owners won't get away with it on the Platina.
Over the years I’ve owned 3 Platinas and they’ve all been great. A lot of the hate I think is from people who buy it thinking it's going to be a performance bike for a budget price.
This is because Honda’s reliability is often compared to it. Bajaj is better, but they aren’t quite there yet. Some owners are lucky, some aren't.
It's all about perspective. The Platina is great coming from a bicycle or walking. If you are downgrading from a bigger bike, you are going to be disappointed.
