Is this the Mahindra XUV.e8's bold step forward in design, or a lazy electric conversion of the XUV700?
Car enthusiasts have been talking a lot about the Mahindra XUV.e8's design. It has a lot in common with its ICE counterpart, the XUV700, but there are some differences—most notably in the front fascia and some EV specific design elements. The result has been debates as to whether Mahindra has done enough to set its electric offering apart, and give its EV line its own identity. Some say it's smart to continue the design continuity with the popular XUV700; others say a more radical break would have been fine for a next generation electric vehicle. In many cases, the conversation revolves around striking a balance between brand recognition and the need for EVs to be unique in a highly competitive market. But there's also talk of how the design decisions could affect the car's aerodynamics and efficiency, which are key considerations for an EV.
I believe it makes sense to keep it similar to the XUV700. Why mess with success? People love that design. On top of that, it'll make the switch for buyers from ICE to electric a little easier.
Lazy, lazy, lazy. Blew it on having a chance to create something truly futuristic. It's just an XUV700 with closed grille and some blue accents.
It's a good middle ground. Not so alienating to existing Mahindra fans, but with enough EV specific touches to feel fresh. I like it.
It's fine design, but I'd have liked to see them push the aero further. In an EV, every bit of efficiency counts and this looks like it could be slipperier.
In fact, I like this approach. It doesn't need every EV to look like something from 3000 AD. It's classy, but not too classy.
It's growing on me. Initially, I thought it was a bit too similar to the XUV700, but the more I look at it, the more I like how it is subtly different.
It is disappointing that they played it safe. Mahindra missed a chance to be bold in redefining automotive design with EVs.
