Is the perception that the Mahindra Bolero is an unsafe vehicle, or is it actually?

The Indian automotive landscape is littered with decades of Mahindra Bolero, the most popular vehicle in rural India. But there's been a lot of debate about its safety features, or lack thereof. Others also say that its wide stance and high ground clearance make it inherently safe, or at least safer than cars, as it's much harder for a cyclist to not notice a big, clunky 4WD barrelling towards them. In some contexts, the boxy design of the vehicle and ladder frame chassis are considered a strength; in other contexts they are considered a weakness. Does the Bolero's reputation for toughness extend to passenger safety in many situations? It also discusses the way shifting safety standards and consumer expectations are affecting the way people perceive a vehicle such as the Bolero.

The Bolero may not be winning any safety awards, but it's not a death trap. This is a solid build, and it can take a beating that would total smaller cars. Sometimes simple is safer.
