Is the Nissan Juke's CVT transmission a deal breaker?

This is where the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) in the Nissan Juke has come under fire. CVTs aim to boost fuel economy and deliver a seamless power delivery—with detractors saying they cost the thrill of driving with an automatic or manual. One of the main criticisms of the Juke's CVT has been its 'rubber band' effect – the revs of the engine don't always correlate with the vehicle's acceleration in a way which is natural to many drivers. There also has been reliability concerns with Nissan CVTs in general. But some drivers besotted with the smoothness and efficiency of the CVT, especially in city driving conditions, are not so enthusiastic. The question, therefore, is whether efficiency and driving enjoyment can be reconciled, and whether CVT's benefits are worth its drawbacks in a car that strikes a marketing partnership with notions of sport.

Absolutely ruins it. Trying to drive a blender is like this. There's the engine drone, no sense of acceleration, it sucks all the fun out of a peppy little car.

I don't get the hate. It's different, sure, but you get used to it and it is super smooth. And the fuel savings are very real. City driving is what it’s perfect for.

The CVT is fine for normal driving, but lacks any sort of sportiness, which is what you’re looking for. Nissan forgot the 'sport' in sport utility vehicle.

I've owned a Juke for years now, and I can tell you that the CVT hate is overblown. It's not the deal breaker everyone makes it out to be, but it's not perfect. If you just keep up with maintenance it's fine.

The CVT is a compromise, as is everything in car design. For what the Juke is, it works. If you want a sports car, you buy a sports car.

I test drove one and still couldn't get past the CVT. That's just how it works, but it felt like the car was slipping constantly. The whole experience got killed for me.

It's not just the CVT that is being discussed. CVT or not, the Juke's light weight and tight turning radius make it fun in the city. It's all about perspective.
