Is the Nexon's infotainment system worth the hype?
The Nexon, which Tata has been heavily promoting for the infotainment capabilities, especially with its latest facelift model. On paper, the 10.25-inch touchscreen looks stunning and Tata claims it to present a seamless and intuitive user experience. But its actual performance has been a bit of a debate. There have been reports of lag and glitches with this mouse, but these are, reportedly, very few. There are also users claiming it’s as responsive as they could hope, with features to back that up. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also part of the system, although little is known about how these integrate well enough to make things safe and convenient. The voice command feature, for one, works with Indian accents, and all Indian languages. And being that infotainment systems are only growing more and more important in car buying decisions, particularly among younger buyers, how does Nexon's system stand up in real world use?
While I've had the new Nexon for a few months now, the infotainment system is pretty decent. It’s not perfect but it is a huge improvement over the older models. It's mostly responsive and anyway provides an intuitive UI.
Decent? It's still pretty laggy in comparison with the systems they pack into cars from Hyundai or Kia. It may look nice, but who wants to use something like that on a bumpy road? The response to touch goes haywire. The software optimization is a work that has to be done by Tata.
People are expecting too much I think. This is a budget car, uh, it's not a Tesla. All thing considered, the system works just fine. Apple CarPlay works well and that's what most people are running already.
The voice command feature, for example, is a joke. It knows basic English not to talk about Indian languages. I've already given up trying to use it, and just use the touchscreen instead.
You guys don’t know what you are missing. It’s good that Tata are trying to innovate and bring these features to more affordable cars. It’s not perfect, but it’s certainly pushing things in the right direction.
I actually like the system. Navigation is huge on the large screen, UI is clean. It’s not perfect, sure, but that doesn’t make the situation as bad as people want you to believe.
Real talk, what everyone really wants is to have their phone mirrored on the screen. Android Auto works well as long as it does (and it does), everything else is just bells and whistles.
