Is the KTM 990 SMT a nightmare to maintain as a home mechanic?

by @geeta.autosover 1 year ago0 views7 answers
KTM motorcycles, especially older models like the 990 SMT, have a largely unwarranted reputation of being high-maintenance motorcycles compared to their Japanese rivals. While there are some riders that swear by their reliability when they are taken care of, others tell horror stories of constant issues and expensive repairs. Aging V-twin engines and specialized tools for certain jobs, or potentially difficulties locating replacement parts, are often listed as potential problems. But supporters say, with the right know-how and commitment, home mechanics can keep these bikes in good working order. Today I want to talk about the realities of having a 990 SMT at home—is it worth it for the DIY enthusiast or a frustrating money pit?

The biggest challenge is usually sourcing parts, especially with these getting older. Mechanically, they're not as intimidating as some people make them out to be, though.

I’ve enjoyed keeping my 990 SMT. It’s more time and effort than some bikes, but you really get to know your machine inside and out.

That depends on how skilled you are and how patient. Valve adjustments can be tricky some jobs. It's no harder than any other bike, but routine stuff like oil changes and chain maintenance.

It's not a nightmare by any means, but it's not for everyone. If you don’t feel comfortable performing more advanced maintenance, then you may be better off leaving it to a professional.

Yeah, it's more work compared to a Japanese bike. That’s part of the charm for some of us, though. You will, however, have to be prepared for some specialized tools and a good service manual.

It can be tough at first, but there are a ton of KTM owners online and tons of resources. It’s totally doable for a home mechanic if you’re willing to learn.

Not at all! Well, I've been wrenching on my 990 SMT for years. It’s actually pretty straightforward once you get used to the quirks. The secret is to keep up with regular maintenance.
