Is the Hyundai Creta EV a whole new electric SUV experience, or just another electric SUV?

Hyundai Creta EV unveiled with impressive specs: up to 473 km range, 51.4 kWh battery option. Based on that same popular Creta platform that has been one of the bestsellers in the compact SUV segment. But the EV market is getting more competitive, with established and new players seeking the limelight. On the face of it, the Creta EV appears to be a mix of familiar design and new technology, but can that be enough to make it stand out? It's just an electrified version of an existing model, say some, while others view it as a smart step in using a popular nameplate. But pricing, which has not yet been announced, will probably be key to its success. Hyundai also has a bit of an EV track record with that Kona Electric, so that could amount to something. Can the Creta EV’s combination of brand recognition and electric powertrain shake up the market, or will it find it hard to differentiate itself in an increasingly crowded field?

Hyundai's definitely a smart move. Given the Creta name has a huge following, slapping an electric powertrain on it is a sure fire way to get noticed. And that 473 km range is no joke, it’s practical for city driving and road trips.

I don't think it's a game changer. Yeah, it’s got decent specs, but it seems like Hyundai is just electrifying an existing model. Where's the innovation? What I was expecting was something that was built from the ground up as an EV.

The truth is, the success of the Creta EV will depend on the pricing. If Hyundai can price it right, then it could be huge. However, if it's priced like the Kona Electric, it may not succeed.

I think this is a good middle ground. Not everyone wants a futuristic looking EV – some people just want a familiar car that is electric. That’s exactly what those buyers would need.

Game-changer? Nah. But it doesn't need to be. Hyundai's just filling in the blanks, and the Creta EV should sell well enough. It's certainly not revolutionary, but it's the right step in the right direction for mainstream EV adoption.
