Is the 1-star S-Presso’s GNCAP rating a deal breaker for safety conscious buyers?
The major point of contention had been the S-Presso's poor performance in Global NCAP crash tests which got it just a 1-star safety rating. And it is a rating that has serious questions about the structural integrity of the vehicle and occupant protection in the event of a crash. India has one of the highest rates of road accidents in the world, says critics, Maruti Suzuki should put more emphasis on safety. The S-Presso defenders say it complies with all the Indian safety regulations and the GNCAP tests are more rigorous than the law stipulates. The other debate is if budget conscious buyers in the entry level segment are willing to pay more for additional safety features and if Maruti should bear the cost of safety improvement at the cost of affordability.
Absolutely a deal-breaker. Poor crash safety cannot be made up for by any number of features.
But remember, it’s an entry level car, it’s concerning. For the price point, you can't expect luxury car safety.
The 1 star rating isn’t good, but it’s better than a 2 wheeler. It's all relative in India.
Any modern car with such a low safety rating is, I think, unacceptable, regardless of price.
Legally, it meets Indian safety standards. GNCAP is just an extra test.
It is non negotiable that safety should be. Even if it means slightly higher prices, Maruti needs to do better.
It’s probably fine for city driving at low speeds. I wouldn't want to be in it in a highway crash, though.
