How safe is the Hyundai Venue CNG compared to its petrol version?
The talk about safety implications has started since factory fitted CNG kits have been introduced in vehicles like the Hyundai Venue. Although CNG is generally regarded as a safe fuel, the addition of a CNG tank and accompanying components raise questions regarding the impact of the CNG tank and components on vehicle's overall safety structure and crash performance. But for some, gas leaks risk or whether or not one will adversely affect the car's weight distribution and handling are concerns. The factory fitted CNG systems are designed to be safe and are tested rigorously, according to some. The debate sometimes also extends to a comparison of safety features of CNG vs. petrol variants, the efficiency of safety mechanisms of CNG systems and how these might affect consumer confidence. These issues are also related to broader questions of perception vs. reality in CNG vehicle safety, standards of regulation for CNG vehicles, and procedures for addressing these issues in design and marketing efforts of these vehicles by the manufacturers.
Initially I was worried about safety but after research I realized that factory fitted CNG systems are actually quite safe. They have many safety valves and are very tested.
The car's handling changes a little because of the added weight of the CNG tank. It’s not unsafe, but it feels different from the petrol version, particularly around corners.
I believe that the safety concerns are overblown. The Venue CNG has all the same safety features as the petrol variant and modern CNG systems are incredibly safe.
My biggest worry is that we have no long term data on the safety of CNG vehicles in the real world. It’s relatively new technology in mainstream cars.
I’ve been in a minor accident with a CNG car, and they are just as safe as petrol cars. It was just a case of the safety systems doing their job.
Honestly, I feel safer in a CNG car. They are far less flammable than petrol and tanks designed to withstand amazing pressure.
The real safety issue isn't the car, but the quality of the CNG available. Engine issues caused by poor quality fuel are a safety concern in themselves.
