For many riders, reliability is going to be a big factor, especially if you plan on using your bikes for long-distance touring or as a daily commuter. Like other KTM models, the KTM 390 Adventure SW has sometimes been the subject of debate about its long-term reliability. Riders range from those who have excellent experiences with few issues to those who have had various problems. In this regard, people usually talk about reliability comparisons between the 390 Adventure SW and its rivals, like the Royal Enfield Himalayan, BMW G310GS, or even Japanese competitors. This never-ending conversation amongst adventure bike enthusiasts takes into account factors such as build quality, frequency of required maintenance, and availability of spare parts in different regions.

The 390 Adventure SW has been rock solid, in my experience. Mine has over 30,000 km on it and no major issues.

The 390 Adventure SW has a reputation for being high maintenance, like every KTM. If you keep up on the service schedule, it's reliable, but more work than other competitors.

My friend's Himalayan has been way more reliable than mine, which I've had for two years. The trick is to do as the manual says and not to skimp on maintenance.

It does need a bit more service than Japanese bikes. The flip side is that it’s more engaging to ride and has better performance.

KTM sorted out most of the teething issues of the early models. The SW version currently is pretty solid.

I don't think the reliability concerns are overblown. Yes, it’s not bulletproof, but it’s not the fragile machine that some make it out to be.

What I dislike most is how expensive parts and service are. It's reliable enough, but when something does go wrong, it really hurts the wallet.

I owned both and would say it’s roughly on par with the BMW G310GS for reliability. They're not unreliable, but they need more attention than a Japanese bike.
