How does the RSV4 1100 Factory stack up for reliability against Japanese superbikes?

Aprilia is known for making great high performance motorcycles, but their reliability is often questioned versus Japanese brands such as Honda, Yamaha and Kawasaki. The RSV4 1100 Factory is the flagship of the family, showing what Italian engineering is at its best. Yet, some of the riders have concerns about possible maintenance problems, availability of parts and long term durability. Are these concerns warranted or has Aprilia been able to match their Japanese competitors with respect to reliability? So let's talk about maintenance costs, reliability tradeoffs, and real world experiences.

Dealer support is hit or miss as far as where you live but reliability is fine. Something to think about before you buy.

It’s a race bike for the street, but a high strung one. It's going to need more attention than a CBR, of course. That’s just part of the experience of owning something special.

Mine has 30K miles with no major issues. You just have to make sure to do oil changes and valve checks. Those who complain tend not to maintain the basics.

Japanese bikes definitely have higher maintenance costs than American bikes. Man, the V4 sound is worth it though!

The engine is solid, but I've had all kinds of electronics problems. It’s nothing major, but annoying gremlins pop up more often than on my old GSXR.

It depends on how you use it, I think. They're pretty bulletproof as a track only bike. Daily rider? Might be a different story.

The reliability issues are exaggerated by people. Modern Aprilias are solid. Yeah, they may need more attention than a Honda, but that’s part of the allure of owning an exotic bike.

Reliability is good, but parts availability sucks. It took weeks to wait for a simple sensor. If it's your only bike, something to consider.

It’s definitely better, but not quite there yet. I spend less time in the shop than my buddy’s RSV4. Great when it runs though!

I have had my RSV4 for 3 years now and have had zero issues. If you just follow the maintenance schedule it’s as reliable as any Japanese bike I’ve owned.
