How does the Dominar 400 fare on long touring rides as opposed to purpose built tourers?

The touring potential of the Dominar 400 is praised a lot, although the opinion on how it measures up against long distance oriented bikes is divided. It is comfortable and stable on highways, according to some riders, while others feel it doesn’t have everything they’re looking for. Wind protection, fuel range, luggage capacity and seat comfort are among factors. How well does it handle with fully loaded with gear and a pillion rider is another question. For some, its versatility makes it a great all rounder for those who can’t afford multiple bikes, for others it’s a compromise that doesn’t excel at anything. In terms of fatigue, enjoyment and practicality over long distances, how do the Dominar’s touring credentials compare to a dedicated tourer?

I have done a 1000km trip on my Dominar and surprisingly comfortable it was. Great for highway cruising because the upright seating position and smooth engine. It’s not as plush as a full on tourer, but it’s a hell of a lot more versatile day to day.

On long rides, the lack of wind protection is a big problem. After a few hours on the highway you really feel it. A good aftermarket windscreen does help, but it’s not ideal compared to a proper touring bike.

Having owned both a Dominar and a Royal Enfield Himalayan, I feel the Dominar is actually better for tarmac touring. At high speeds it's more stable, and the engine isn't as stressed. Obviously the Himalayan wins off road, but for pure highway miles, I prefer the Dominar.

It's all about expectations. Of course it falls short if you’re comparing it to a Honda Gold Wing. For its price point and what it was made for, it’s a great tourer. The trick is to buy some decent luggage and perhaps a few ergonomic mods.

Instead, I think the Dominar makes for a good weekend tourer and not really a cross country machine. For 2–3 day trips it’s perfect but if you’re going longer you’ll miss the creature comforts of a dedicated touring bike.
