How does it fare in the real world, in terms of fuel efficiency?
For many Indian commuters, fuel efficiency is a critical factor and many times a deciding factor in buying a motorcycle. Official mileage figures are offered by manufacturers, but performance in real life has a lot to do with the riding conditions, maintenance and how individual owners ride the bikes. Owners and potential buyers of the Freedom 125 NG04 Disc have been talking about its fuel efficiency. Some claim to make impressive figures close to or even above the company's claims, others report disappointingly low numbers. Some of the factors being discussed as the cause of the fuel consumption include city traffic, highway cruising, pillion riding and even the break in period. In fact, even the Freedom 125’s efficiency is up for debate in terms of real world use versus paper use.
From my experience, the Freedom 125 NG04 Disc gives me about 55-60 kmpl in city traffic, decent but not as much as Bajaj claims. On highways, it's better where I've got a maximum of 65 kmpl. It’s not bad, but for 125cc commuter I was expecting something more.
I've had much better results. In mixed riding conditions, I am getting 65 – 70 kmpl consistently after the initial break in period. The trick is smooth riding and maintaining regularly. Of course, if you're heavy on the throttle, the mileage will suffer.
The second you're missing a crucial part: load. With a pillion, my mileage drops to around 50-55 kmpl. It's still good but something to think about if you regularly have a passenger with you.
I think people expect too much from these small bikes. Fuel efficiency for such a performance is pretty good. For my 30 km daily commute, I get about 60 kmpl, which is great. It's all about perspective.
Let's talk about long-term efficiency. I've had my Freedom for over a year now and found the mileage to actually improve over time. I started off around 55 kmpl now I am getting close to 65 kmpl regularly. It definitely helps to break in properly and keep it maintained properly.
The Freedom 125's fuel economy is very sensitive to tire pressure, I've found. It has also made a difference in that keeping the tires properly inflated has increased my average from about 58 kmpl to 63 kmpl. It’s a little thing that makes a lot of difference.
Being a 100cc bike switcher, I was not happy with Freedom’s mileage. I had to adjust my riding style and get used to the power but now I’m getting around 62-65 kmpl consistently. It's the adaptation to the bike.
