Does the Honda XRE 300 have the chops for serious off-road riding, or is it a street-biased adventure bike?

It has some riders swearing it is their trail bike of choice, while others see it more as a comfortable commuter with light off-road potential. The bike looks to have some off-road prowess with a 21-inch front wheel and long-travel suspension. But its weight and street-oriented tires have given some pause over its suitability for more extreme off-road adventures. Riders argue the XRE 300 is up to the task of off-roading, or at least on gravel roads and light trails.

In fact, the air-cooled engine is, actually, an advantage off-road. If you’re in the middle of nowhere, fewer things going wrong is always a good thing.

In my opinion, this is ideal for adventure riding, which includes both on- and off-road stages. It does neither of them very well, but manages to do both well enough.
