Do people really mean what they say about the Interceptor 650 being beginner friendly?

For new riders, the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 is regularly touted as a great option as it’s easy to manage power, has classic looks, and is relative cheap. But there’s some disagreement about whether its weight, lack of modern safety features, and questionable reliability make it a less than ideal choice for those just dipping their toes into the car shopping pool. Some say it’s too simple and forgiving to be a good learning bike, while others say newer, lighter bikes with more advanced technology are safer options for new riders. This discussion is based on the power delivery of the bike, its handling characteristics and maintenance requirements. If you’re a new rider trying to select your first bike, then you need to know what are the pros and cons of going with an Interceptor 650 over other options. Is the retro charm of it worth giving up for those who are still learning to play?

I began on an Interceptor and it’s a good bike to start on. It's stable at low speeds, there is good visibility, and it's smooth and predictable power. On top of that, you aren't going to get in trouble too quickly. At first, it was intimidating, but you get used to the weight really quickly.

For a first bike, I wouldn't recommend the Interceptor as a first bike, as someone who teaches new riders. As you can see, it’s too heavy for many beginners to feel confident with, particularly when moving slowly or picking up. What's more, some models lack ABS. For learning, there are better, lighter options out there.

I believe it depends on the beginner. If you're a bigger person, or you've had some experience with heavy machinery, the Interceptor might be okay. It’s a lot of bike, but for smaller riders or for those with no motorized experience at all, it might be too much. In my opinion it's more of an intermediate-beginner bike.

Power delivery, ergonomics and feel are all beginner friendly but not so much the technology. Bikes today, such as those with riding modes and higher end ABS, can be more forgiving in regards to beginner mistakes. Now that’s not to say that learning on a simpler bike won’t make you a better rider in the long run.

I started on a smaller bike and went to the Interceptor, and I’m glad I did it that way. I think you can start on the Interceptor, but having some experience before playing with one of the heavier bikes made it more fun. For a beginner looking to upgrade, it’s a great second bike.
