Did Bajaj make a mistake by discontinuing the Boxer in India?
The Bajaj Boxer was a popular brand with Indian riders, particularly those in rural areas, because it was affordable, efficient on fuel and low on maintenance costs. But Bajaj chose to drop the model from the Indian market while it kept selling it in other countries. The decision has been controversial among motorcycle lovers. Was Bajaj’s decision to focus on higher end motorcycles a strategic move or did they miss out on a market? Let us consider how Indian consumers' preferences are changing, the arrival of competition in the commuter segment and possibilities of modernizing the Boxer to meet the current standards. What would the Indian motorcycle market look like today if the Boxer was still there?
Huge mistake. Rural India still has market for simple things which work.
Nah, it was time to move on. The Boxer didn't fit with the modern safety and emission standards.
Instead they should've updated it. Missed opportunity.
Smart move. To compete Bajaj needed to focus on the more profitable models.
It was basically replaced by the CT100. More modern package, same spirit.
Boxer had its time. In budget bikes, Indian consumers now want more features too.
But they are still making it for export. It shows demand, but not in India anymore.
