Could the Tata Winger be turned into an off road adventure vehicle?

by Ashutoshover 1 year ago0 views7 comments
Having the idea of turning the utilitarian Tata Winger (known as a van in many parts of the world) into an off road capable adventure vehicle has piqued interest from outdoor enthusiasts and DIY modifiers. Its boxy shape and interior size give a good play on customizing, but if it was intended for rugged terrain, one has doubts. Often debates are about whether it can be upgraded to off road suspension, drivetrain and body without sacrificing its structural integrity. While some argue it's a great project vehicle because it's inexpensive and parts are available, some say starting with a more capable base vehicle would be more practical to begin with. Ground clearance, approach and departure angles, engine power, and the cost effectiveness of such a conversion versus purpose built off road vehicles are often discussed as part of the conversation.

Modded Winger could work great for light off roading and forest trails. It won't tackle hardcore rock crawling, but don't expect it to.

The biggest hurdle is a lack of 4WD. So you would have to do a drivetrain swap, which is a huge endeavor and probably not worth the effort.

I've seen crazier conversions. Everything is possible if you have enough determination and fabrication skills. It’d be a one of a kind rig for sure.

With overlanding in mind, the Winger’s boxy shape is perfect for the build. Lots of room for gear, and simple to throw a roof rack or rooftop tent on top.

Why bother? What you'd spend on mods, you could buy a real 4x4 that is actually made for off road use.

You could, but you'd be fighting an uphill battle. The Winger wasn't designed for off roading so you'd have to change nearly everything.

Absolutely! With the right mods, a Winger could be a beast off road. You add a lift kit, chunky tires and some skid plates and you're good to go.
