Could the BYD Seagull compete in Western markets?
Because the BYD Seagull was successful in China, people have started to speculate if it might be successful in Western markets such as Europe and North America. These make you wonder how the car would have to be modified to fit different safety standards and consumer demands. Pricing is also an issue, because we don't expect other markets to see the ultra low Chinese price given import costs, taxes and different market dynamics. Others say that despite a higher price tag, the Seagull could still undercut existing EV offerings and shake the market up. But others are skeptical that Western consumers will take to a relatively unknown Chinese brand in the budget segment where reliability and resale value are so important. It also touches on some larger geopolitical issues, as well as domestic auto industries.
It won't compete in the West no way. The price will be driven up so high, by safety standards alone, that it will lose its main selling point.
I think it has a shot. If BYD can keep up the quality, they could have a niche in the western markets that are crying out for affordable EVs.
It might go in Europe but I can't see it happening in the US. Americans are stuck with larger vehicles and established brands.
You never know how powerful a good price point is. People will give it a chance if it’s much cheaper than other EVs regardless of brand.
The Seagull could be a game changer for urban markets. Not everyone requires, or wants, a large, expensive EV for city driving.
All will depend on marketing. If BYD can build customer trust and provide good after sales support, they can overcome the stigma of the 'Chinese car'.
I hope it works out. Competition in the EV market can only be a good thing for consumers.
