Can the Skoda Elroq’s range and charging capabilities beat established EV players?
There are three battery options for the Skoda Elroq, with the entry level 52kWh battery providing a WLTP range of 370km and the top tier 77kWh giving 560km. They are also capable of charging, and can charge from 10% to 80% in only 30 minutes on rapid charge. But the EV market is becoming a lot more competitive, with many established players now offering similar or better range and charging specs. Take Tesla, for another: by offering a Supercharger network and long range models, it has set a bar high. However, some of the newer entrants like the Lucid Air are really pushing how far you can go on an electric vehicle. Elroq’s success may hinge on more than just its raw specs, and will depend on partnerships with charging infrastructure, real world efficiency and how well the car works with existing charging networks. Do you believe the Elroq will end up being competitive with its competitors when it comes to range anxiety and charging convenience?
On paper, the range is decent but in reality, it’s all about the charging network. Unless Skoda gets some big charging partners, they're going to struggle against the dominance of Tesla's Supercharger.
People are overestimating how important super long range is, I think. For most people's daily and occasional long trips, the Elroq's 560km top range is more than enough. We're not all road tripping every weekend.
Both Tesla and VW ID.4 owner here, and I can tell you that charging speed matters more than peak range. The Elroq has a pretty competitive 30 minute 10 80 percent charge time. If they can make that happen consistently, that's a winner.
You all forget about efficiency. Raw range numbers don't give the full picture. If the Elroq can outperform its competition in real world efficiency, it could be a game changer for real world usability.
I’m more concerned with the entry level 370km range. For city dwellers, that may be fine, but for those of us in rural areas or with longer commutes, that’s cutting it close.
The specs look good, but Skoda has to do more to make it easy for users to find and use chargers. What will truly differentiate the chargers from the competition is a seamless, reliable charging experience.
We shouldn't underestimate VW Group's resources. Should they be able to leverage their partnerships and scale up, the Elroq could have access to a strong charging network pretty quickly. It’s not simply about the car, it’s the ecosystem.
