Discussions and Questions Nissan X Trail
Is the X-Trail's off-road capability an SUV image or just a soft roader?

The X-Trail went on some pretty gnarly forest tracks and never let me down. It’s no Land Cruiser, but for the occasional adventure it’s more than capable.

It’s a mall crawler, let’s be real. I attempted to follow my mate's Jeep on moderate trail and had to turn back. This one will stick to the pavement.

It's all about expectations. Surprisingly competent off road for a family SUV. With nothing to lose, I’ve done beach driving and muddy campgrounds without issue. They won't go rock crawling, but don't expect to.

In fact, the AWD system is pretty clever. I've somehow gotten myself out of some pretty tricky situations that I thought I’d never get out of. It's far from useless, and it won't win any off road competitions.

I don’t think people give enough credit to the X-Trail. If you have good tires and some common sense it will handle more than most owners will ever ask of it. It’s no slouch, but it’s not a dedicated off roader.
Has the X-Trail's CVT transmission been a deal breaker or has the reliability issue been exaggerated?
06 January 2025 09:51
I have had my X-Trail for 3 years and 60,000km with no CVT problems. A lot of the complaints I think are people who are just repeating old information or people who don't take care of their vehicles.

I'll never trust a Nissan CVT again, sorry. My old Altima had one fail and it was a nightmare. When there are so many other great SUVs out there, it's not worth the risk.

My 2019 X-Trail has a fine CVT but did take the extended warranty for peace of mind. Smooth drive and I don't notice any problems.

I too was hesitant about the CVT, but after test driving it I actually prefer it to a traditional auto. In traffic and on the highway it's so smooth. Just follow the maintenance schedule.

The newer Nissan CVTs are much improved according to my mechanic friend, but he still says to avoid them for long term reliability. The X-Trail is otherwise great, so it’s a tough call.
What’s the X-Trail interior quality and tech features like in 2024?

Nissan has really improved their game with the new X-Trail. And the big touchscreen is responsive, and easy to use, and the materials feel much more premium than before. Not quite Mazda levels of luxury, but close.

I am honestly a little bit disappointed. It’s all a bit tech a generation behind the Koreans and there’s still too many hard plastics for my liking. It’s not bad, but it’s not class leading either.

An enormous leap forward from the interior of the old model, the infotainment system occasionally suffers from being a little clunky. The digital dash itself is a thing I do love though; it's really customizable and looks great.

I think it's spot on for the price. Yes, you can have fancier interiors but you will pay for it. X-Trail offers good value for the money. The ProPilot assist is also fantastic on long drives and plus.

The new X-Trail feels like a big step up in interior quality, compared to a 2018 CR-V. The seats are very comfortable and I like Nissan’s more straightforward approach to tech that I’ve seen compared to some of the overly complicated systems out there.
Is this third row in the Nissan X-Trail actually usable, or just a gimmick?
06 January 2025 09:51
The third row is super handy for short trips with the kids' friends, and I can definitely say it's tight, but it is tight. Of course, I wouldn't want to be back there for hours, but it's just perfect for school runs or little errands.

All a marketing gimmick. There isn’t enough room back there for an adult, much less my 8 year old. If you need real 7 seat capability, you're better off with a proper MPV.

That's a compromise, and it's not always bad. Ours we use maybe once a month when the grandparents come, and it's nice to have the option without having to use a huge vehicle everyday.

I'm 5'6" and I've sat in the third row on a couple of 2 hour road trips. It isn’t luxurious, but if you aren’t too tall you can manage. The bigger problem is when all seats are up, there's not much cargo space.

It was bought for occasional 7 seat use, but we’ve used it much more than we expected. It’s great for when you carpool or the kids have sleepovers. Don't expect to fit adults back there comfortably though.
