The X-Trail's e-POWER system is compared to traditional hybrids in real-world driving.

The Nissan X-Trail's e-POWER system is a different way of doing hybrid technology. The e-POWER system is different from conventional hybrids, which can have the gasoline engine directly drive the wheels; the e-POWER system uses the engine only to produce electricity for the electric motors that power the vehicle. The setup promises EV like driving experience with the convenience of a gasoline engine for charging. But the issue of whether this complicated system has any real advantage over conventional hybrids in terms of fuel efficiency, performance or long term reliability is up for debate. The smooth, instant torque raves some drivers, but others wonder if the benefits are worth the potential hassle of a newer, unproven technology.

I love my e-POWER X-Trail! City driving is a breeze thanks to instant torque, and it feels more like an EV than any other hybrid I’ve driven. It’s been great on fuel economy too.

It’s clever tech, but I’m not sure it’s any better than a good plug in hybrid. The fuel economy isn't that much better than my friend's RAV4 Hybrid, and you still have to fill up with gas.

But I have doubts about long term reliability with the e-POWER system, which is smooth. It’s a lot under the hood, and I’m not sure the benefits outweigh the potential repair costs down the line.

For someone who can't charge at home, the e-POWER is a great compromise. I don’t have range anxiety, or have to search for chargers, but I get that EV feel. Perfect for my situation.

I took both the e-POWER and the normal hybrid X-Trail for a test drive. I found the e-POWER to be definitely more responsive, but hard to justify for my budget at a price premium.
