Is the X-Trail's off-road capability an SUV image or just a soft roader?
A comfortable family SUV with off road pretensions, the Nissan X-Trail has always sat on the fence. Though it’s not sold as a hardcore off roader, Nissan does point to its all wheel drive system and various terrain modes. As a result, there has been ongoing debate on how well the X-Trail can really do when the pavement ends. Some owners claim it can handle rough tracks and mild off road conditions, but others believe it's out of its depth anywhere more challenging than a gravel road. The conversation is often about ground clearance, approach and departure angles, and how well the AWD system works in comparison to more off road oriented SUVs.
The X-Trail went on some pretty gnarly forest tracks and never let me down. It’s no Land Cruiser, but for the occasional adventure it’s more than capable.
