Is the Astor practical for a family of four that often takes the road?

I am someone who does weekend getaways with family, and I think the Astor hits a sweet spot. Not too big to cause trouble in the city, but comfy enough for driving long. Don't expect to have the same amount of gear that you normally would in a Hector!

It has worked well for our family of four so far, but only because we still have little kids. As they get older I can see it becoming a tight squeeze, especially for longer trips.

It really depends on what you expect out of it. It's light on the inside compared to larger SUVs, so it might disappoint you. There is space and ability for family trips, but coming from a hatchback, it feels spacious and capable.

I've had my Astor now for 18 months and it's been rock solid. No unexpected issues at all. Everything's been running smooth, and we've been running regular services.

It hasn’t been positive for me. I’ve had a faulty AC compressor and a few electrical gremlins to deal with. So MG fixed everything under warranty but it was still a hassle.

But I've had a minor issues here and there, but it's been mostly reliable. A weird rattle from the dashboard finally got fixed after two visits, and they kept having to fix this infotainment system they go on about, which required some sort of software update. Nothing major, though.

When I bought it I was worried about reliability, but my Astor has been surprisingly trouble free. It feels to be built well and I have not had any unexpected repairs in 25,000 km.

The MG service center has been frustrating and the car itself has been good, reliable. But they aren't always equipped to deal with issues quickly, which can be a pain.

I've been using mine for over 2 years now and it's been generally good, but a few niggling issues. Nothing big, but small things such as sensors going haywire or the start stop system being temperamental.

As a Japanese car enthusiast, I was dubious about the reliability of the Astor. So far, though, it's as reliable as my old Honda. With no unexpected repairs, just routine maintenance.
Is the ADAS of the MG Astor just a gimmick or the hype it is?
07 January 2025 06:25
I've had my Astor for about 6 months now and ADAS is hit or miss. In the city traffic, it's more of a headache than a help, but great on highways. It turns out I end up turning it off most of the time.
Is the ADAS of the MG Astor just a gimmick or the hype it is?
07 January 2025 06:25
Are you kidding? The ADAS is a game-changer! A few times it's saved my bacon when I'm tired on long drives. It's not perfect, but it's a hell of a lot better than not having it at all.

I don’t think people are expecting enough from ADAS. It’s not a replacement for attentive driving, it’s an assistant. It's actually pretty useful once you know its limitations.

The problem is that MG hyped it too much. The tech is decent, but it's stretching to call it 'autonomous'. It’s more like enhanced cruise control with some extra bells and whistles.

I tested both the Astor and the Creta and the Astor’s ADAS feels more refined. Sure, it's not perfect, but it does take a step in the right direction for cars of this price.

I don’t want people to rely too much on ADAS and get complacent. Indian roads are unpredictable and it’s not foolproof. In fact, it might make some drivers less safe.

Astor has a good ADAS, but it needs more fine tuning for Indian conditions. Sometimes unmarked lanes and erratic traffic throw it off things. Perhaps future updates will enhance it?
