Is the Astor practical for a family of four that often takes the road?
The MG Astor is often marketed as a versatile family car, but how well it actually does this varies depending on your family’s road trip preferences. It does come with a spacious cabin for its class, but users have complained of the boot space being a little restricted for longer journeys. The rear seats also come under fire for comfort on longer drives, with some saying they are supportive, while others lament the absence of under thigh support. And fuel efficiency on highways is a question of practicality for road trips. Some owners like the car's highway manners and cruise control for long trips, while others think it's less than what you get in a larger SUV. The debate surrounding the Astor consists of whether it strikes the correct equilibrium in regards to city maneuverability and highway comfort in a family car.
The Astor has been great for our road trips, we are a family of four. The boot is a little small but we’ve managed week long trips by packing smart. The panoramic sunroof is great for the kids!
Long trips, I find the Astor a bit cramped. 5+ hour drives aren’t the most comfortable for adults in the rear seats. For city use it's fine, but I wish I'd gone for something bigger for our family road trips.
This has been perfect for our family. Fuelling efficiency is decent if you aren’t pushing it too hard and the ADAS features make highway driving a breeze. We had done multiple 1000km trips without any problems.
Road trips are a mixed bag at the Astor. The small boot is a real pain, but it’s comfortable and feature packed. And we always end up playing Tetris with our luggage.
I am someone who does weekend getaways with family, and I think the Astor hits a sweet spot. Not too big to cause trouble in the city, but comfy enough for driving long. Don't expect to have the same amount of gear that you normally would in a Hector!
It has worked well for our family of four so far, but only because we still have little kids. As they get older I can see it becoming a tight squeeze, especially for longer trips.
It really depends on what you expect out of it. It's light on the inside compared to larger SUVs, so it might disappoint you. There is space and ability for family trips, but coming from a hatchback, it feels spacious and capable.
