It’s worth the hype! The G 580 Edition One is a true electric SUV, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible. It's expensive, sure, but you're basically getting cutting edge tech dressed up in an iconic package.

Hands down a overpriced status symbol. The range is disappointing for the money and let's be honest, most buyers will never take it off road. It's just a way for rich people to get their eco-friendly on, while they show off at the same time.

I think it's somewhere in the middle. But the price is hard to justify, and the technology is impressive. While this is a step in the right direction for luxury EVs, they’re not quite there yet in terms of practicality.

I’m a car enthusiast and I like what Mercedes is trying to do here. It's not perfect, but it's a good start on the way to future electric off roading. It comes at a high price, but that’s to be expected with a first edition luxury EV.

It's all about perspective. It's probably worth it for the target market: wealthy G-Wagen fans who want to go electric. For the rest of us, it’s an interesting peek at the future of luxury EVs.
But will the G 580's boxy design have a material effect on its real world range?
13 January 2025 12:30
Absolutely. The problem is that brick like shape is going to kill the range, especially at highway speeds. It will probably only manage 200 miles in the real world.
But will the G 580's boxy design have a material effect on its real world range?
13 January 2025 12:30
Having some impact, but probably not to the extent that people think it will. Mercedes is not stupid, they've probably put a ton of work into other efficiency factors to make up for the shape.
But will the G 580's boxy design have a material effect on its real world range?
13 January 2025 12:30
Definitely will hurt range, but for the target market, it probably doesn't matter. While G-Wagen buyers want the looks, they don’t necessarily need the range.
But will the G 580's boxy design have a material effect on its real world range?
13 January 2025 12:30
I believe we’re overestimating the impact. There are so many other factors affecting range for modern EVs - battery tech, motor efficiency, weight distribution. That is just one piece of the puzzle.
But will the G 580's boxy design have a material effect on its real world range?
13 January 2025 12:30
But we'll see how they perform in real world tests. I think it’ll be okay for city driving, but long highway trips might be a little rough. Still, most G-Wagen owners aren't road tripping to begin with.
But will the G 580's boxy design have a material effect on its real world range?
13 January 2025 12:30
In some ways, the boxy design might actually help. It's less wind noise at high speeds and better stability. It’s not as slippery as a teardrop, sure, but it has other advantages.
But will the G 580's boxy design have a material effect on its real world range?

I don't care about the shape so much as the weight. The real range killer will be all those batteries in a vehicle that is already heavy.
Does the electric drivetrain of the G 580 improve or deteriorate its off road capabilities?
13 January 2025 12:30
Off-roading is definitely an upgrade from the electric drivetrain. Rock crawling will be a breeze due to instant torque and precise control. And the battery pack's low center of gravity will make it more stable.
Does the electric drivetrain of the G 580 improve or deteriorate its off road capabilities?
13 January 2025 12:30
I'm skeptical. There’s no doubt about range anxiety, especially when you’re stuck in the middle of nowhere. You don’t want to run out of juice on a trail.
Does the electric drivetrain of the G 580 improve or deteriorate its off road capabilities?
13 January 2025 12:30
It's a mixed bag. If the batteries are heavy, they will be an issue in soft terrain, but the electric motors will be fantastic for low speed maneuvers. I’d like to see some real world tests before I make a judgment.
Does the electric drivetrain of the G 580 improve or deteriorate its off road capabilities?
13 January 2025 12:30
How many G 580 owners are actually going to take it off road? Let’s be real. I think the electric drivetrain will be more than capable for the few that do.
Does the electric drivetrain of the G 580 improve or deteriorate its off road capabilities?
13 January 2025 12:30
In fact, the lack of engine noise might actually be a good thing for the off road experience. You will be able to hear the terrain better and communicate better with spotters.
Does the electric drivetrain of the G 580 improve or deteriorate its off road capabilities?

Electric motors are exciting for the potential of individual wheel control. That could be some incredible traction management in tough spots.
Does the electric drivetrain of the G 580 improve or deteriorate its off road capabilities?
13 January 2025 12:30
It will be a real test when I start taking long range off road trips. This could be a game changer for Mercedes, if they can solve the charging issue for remote areas.

29 December 2022 10:15
Yes, it is highly expected that Mercedes-Benz will bring in the new 2019 A-Class sedan to India since the segment is virtually empty of all competition and the company could monopolize the situation well.
