I do not like engine swaps. It reduces the authenticity of the Gypsy. It’s special because of the original engine. If you want something more powerful of an off roader, buy a different vehicle.

These old beasts need swaps to run. Original parts are now becoming scarce, and a modern engine can give a Gypsy a new lease of life. You also have the reliability of newer tech.

It's a slippery slope. You start with an engine swap and then you're changing everything. When does it become a Frankenstein's monster of car parts and not a Gypsy?

I see both sides. Performance can be improved by swaps, but they do change the character of the vehicle. It’s personal but I like to keep things original for the true Gypsy experience.

Off road, the Gypsy is still king. It's light and simple mechanics make it very able in tougher terrain. The new Thar is more comfortable than the Gypsy, but can't match its agility.

Thar is far superior to modern off-roaders. More safety, comfort and reliability without losing much off road capability. The Gypsy is a relic, but it’s fun.

It's apples and oranges. It is a pure mechanical experience that’s hard to replicate. The Thar is all the more reasonable for regular use. It all depends on what you’re looking for.

Modifiability goes to the Gypsy. Every part can be tweaked and upgraded easily. Today’s vehicles are simply too complex and electronic for easy DIY mods.

I'd take the Thar any day. It is safer, more comfortable, and still good enough off road. The Gypsy is cool, but you don't want to make compromises in daily use.

Unfortunately, I believe that stricter emissions laws will eventually remove Gypsys from the road. They'll be garage queens or only used on the roads.

New vehicles will continue to be inhabited by the Gypsy's spirit. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see Maruti release a modern version of the Gypsy in future as Suzuki did with the new Jimny.

It will become a niche hobby vehicle. They'll never be mainstream again, but small communities of enthusiasts will keep them running. That's not to say that's a bad thing.

The fact that Maruti missed offering a diesel Gypsy is something that just went down the drain. That would've been perfect for rural markets and off roading. It would have been even more popular with the fuel efficiency and torque.

What makes the Gypsy special is the petrol engine. It might have been more efficient from a diesel, but it would have changed the character of the vehicle. It’s not always about practicality sometimes.

I think it was a cost issue. It probably didn’t make sense for Maruti to develop a diesel variant as the Gypsy was a niche product.

Too good would have been a diesel Gypsy. It could have eaten into the sales of other Maruti vehicles as well as its competitors. Perhaps they kept it petrol so only a certain group were interested in it.

That’s why so many people are doing engine swaps now because there’s no diesel option. If Maruti would have offered a diesel we might see less modified Gypsys today. This has created a whole subculture of Gypsy modding.
