Will the KTM Adventure 390’s high-revving engine character perform in the adventure riding world?

If it’s an off-road real adventure you’re after, the engine is the bike’s weakest point. Great for road trips, but it can feel a little out of place when things get tough off-road.

It’s a great all-rounder, but it’s stretching things to call it an adventure bike. It's no enduro bike, but I’ve taken mine on some light trails, and it works pretty well.

Absolutely! I've done a few long-distance trips involving lots of off-roading. However, it’s not only the bike.

Don't think of the 390 Adventure as an Adventure Adventure bike. I wouldn’t take it to hardcore off-road adventures, but it’s perfect for mixed-terrain touring.

While it’s not particularly practical, with the right mods, though, it can be a decent adventure bike. I’ve added crash bars, better tires, and a skid plate, and it’s turned the bike’s off-road ability on its head.

An adventure bike for beginners, or people who spend most of their time on tarmac. If you want something for serious off-roading, you are better off with the 790 Adventure R.

It appears that the upcoming 2025 390 Adventure R will deal with quite a few of the current model’s off-road lacks. If you want a true small-displacement ADV, you might be waiting for that.

I believe that folks expect too much. Of course, it’s not going to be as capable as larger ADVs, as it’s a 390cc bike. For the price and size, it is a very good adventure touring bike.

It all depends on how you make of the 390 Adventure. I know for a fact people have taken these bikes to some gnarly. You aren’t totally in control, and it’s really about the adventure mindset over the bike specifics.

Well, the KTM is definitely better for all this mixed touring with lots of twisty roads. Its engine is more powerful, and its handling is a sporty affair on pavement.

If looking for pure long-distance comfort, I'd go for the Himalayan. After hours in the saddle, the upright seating position and good wind protection are a big deal.

Better fuel efficiency of the 390 Adventure puts it on a higher edge for touring. Of course, on long trips, you can go further between fill-ups.

All the way Himalayan for touring. Low-end torque is great for loaded riding, and it's easier to work on if something goes wrong in the middle of nowhere.

I've set up camp on both, and honestly, after touring on them both, I have more confidence in the KTM's more advanced electronics (like traction control and cornering ABS), especially in bad weather.

Simplicity is the Himalayan 450's strength for touring. Easier to fix if it goes wrong, and less to go wrong. And that engine is butter smooth at highway speed.

For touring, the Himalayan is the bike I prefer. The leisurely pace is a bit more enjoyable. It’s not always about getting there the fastest.

The windscreen is adjustable for the stars. On long highway stretches, it makes a huge difference.
