It's the closest thing to a true do-it-all bike out there, I'd say. It's got enough power for highways, it's light enough for trails, and it's comfortable enough for all-day rides. All you have to do is to just adjust your expectations a little.

As a former owner of both dedicated dirt bikes and street bikes, the 690 is a compromise. Sure, it's versatile, but in no one area is it exceptional. I sold mine and got separate ones for road and dirt.

I think people put too much on the "do it all" label. It is incredibly versatile, but it's not going to replace a dedicated MX bike or a comfy touring machine. So much is down to your riding style, finding that balance between the two.

I'd say after having one for a year, it's more of a 'do most things' bike. For mixed riding it's great, but if you ride one type of thing, there are better options out there.

Absolutely worth it. In a class all its own, the performance you get from the 690 is in a different league from most Japanese dual sport machines. You will pay more for maintenance, but you get a much more capable bike.

That depends on what’s important to you. If you want a bike that you can neglect and still run, get a DR650. If you’re willing to spend a little bit more money and time on maintenance and get top-tier performance, the 690 is great.

I believe people hype up the maintenance costs. It’s more than a Japanese bike, but you’re not rebuilding the engine every month. It’s really not that bad if you follow the service schedule.

For me, it's not worth it. But I’d rather have a bike that I can thrash and not worry about the expensive services. The 690 is great, but the maintenance schedule (you really have to ride the heck out of them to go 7k miles between services) is a bit much for a dual sport in my opinion.

While it is not maintenance-free, the newer models aren’t as bad as some make it out to be. The performance gains are huge, however. It’s like comparing a sports car vs. an economy car—yeah, you’re going to spend more to maintain it, but look at what you’re getting.

I've owned both Japanese dual sports and the 690. Sure, the KTM needs more attention, but the riding experience is so much better I don’t mind. It's all about what you value more: Either low maintenance or high performance.

It's a trade-off, for sure. If you’re the kind of rider who really puts the bike through the wringer and values the performance, the extra maintenance is definitely worth it. It’s just so much fun to ride compared to so many of its competitors.

To me, it’s more about how you use the bike. When it's your only bike and you're logging tons of miles on it, the maintenance will get stale. However, if it’s a weekend warrior that you love riding, the extra cost and effort are worth the grin factor.

Not at all! But if you know what you're doing, the power is manageable. It has traction control, as well as different ride modes, which simply allow you to adapt to technical terrain easily. It's all about rider skill.

It's a handful in really tight stuff. It’s heavier and more powerful than the enduro bike, making it harder to maneuver. You can do it, but it's a bigger effort than you'd put into a 450 or 500.

I think it’s a great compromise. It’s not as nimble as a pure dirt bike, but the power is awesome for blasting out of tough situations. And you can actually ride it to the trails comfortably.

Too powerful? Maybe for beginners. However, that power is a godsend for experienced riders on long climbs or on deep sand. It’s just knowing how to use this stuff.

Surprisingly to me, the 690 has been surprisingly capable in technical terrain. Good throttle control and the right tires are the key. It's not as much bike as most people would need to use off-road, but it's not unusable by any means.

For super tight single track, it's definitely overkill. If that’s your main riding, then you’d be better off with something smaller. It’s hard to beat for a mix of fire roads, trails, and some technical stuff.
