I've had both, and I'd say, in my opinion, the XRE 300 is better for technical off-road riding. The trails get tough, and it’s lighter and more nimble.

Do not overlook parts availability. In South America the parts are easier to find for the XRE 300, which can be a deal breaker.

On rough roads, the Himalayan feels more planted. The XRE 300 has shorter suspension travel, which doesn’t absorb bumps as well as that of its larger sibling.

The fuel efficiency of my XRE 300 is the thing I love about it. It means I can go a lot further between fill-ups, which is important in remote areas.

The Himalayan’s analog instrument cluster with a built-in compass is very useful while navigating. Long adventures are the little things that count.

I've put my XRE 300 through some pretty gnarly single-track trails. With the right tires, it’s more capable than people give it credit for.

That’s no enduro bike, folks. For fire roads and light trails, it’s great, but I wouldn’t want to take anything too technical with it.

The XRE 300 can take serious off-road riding with some mods like better suspension and skid plates. It’s all in how you install it.

I think it’s a good middle ground. It’s comfortable enough for daily commutes but can take weekend trail riding in its stride as well.

The XRE 300 feels heavy and underpowered off-road, compared to something like a CRF450L. In my opinion, it's more of an 80/20 street/dirt bike.

In fact, the air-cooled engine is, actually, an advantage off-road. If you’re in the middle of nowhere, fewer things going wrong is always a good thing.

For long-distance adventures, the XRE 300 is the way to go. It's a tank built, and it has better fuel efficiency. The ones I've taken, on multiple 1000+ mile trips, have worked out just fine.

I have ridden both, and to me, the XRE 300 is the simpler one. On the road, air-cooled engines are much easier to maintain, and that matters on long trips.
