I would suggest something like starting with a CRF250L. While the XRE 300 can be a little tall and heavy for new riders, it is not a problem off-road.

Personally, I say start on a smaller dual sport and work up to the XRE 300. After you've had some experience, it's a great second bike.

Never would I select an XRE 300 for long highway stretches. It doesn't have wind protection and a small engine, so after a couple of hours it becomes exhausting.

It's all about expectations. If you can live with 65-70 mph cruising, then the XRE 300 is just fine. On mountain passes, however, you'll be wishing for more power.
