On longer stretches of highway, how does the Honda XRE 300 fare compared to bigger adventure bikes?

However, for long trips, adventure riders struggle to fit off-road capability and highway comfort into one machine. Fuel efficient and maneuverable, the Honda XRE 300 is also blessed with smaller engine displacement. But some riders aren't convinced it'll be able to keep up comfortable highway speeds for extended periods of time, particularly when compared to larger adventure bikes with 650cc+ engines. While rating highway performance of the XRE 300, there are factors such as vibration, protection against wind, seat comfort, and overall stability above the speed of 90 kph. This is a topic that often causes heated discussions among riders who want to do some cross-country touring or those who are thinking of equipping the XRE 300 as a main touring machine.

I've done 500-mile days on my XRE 300. It's not as comfy as on a big ADV bike, but you can do it. The important thing is to break more often.

Never would I select an XRE 300 for long highway stretches. It doesn't have wind protection and a small engine, so after a couple of hours it becomes exhausting.

It's all about expectations. If you can live with 65-70 mph cruising, then the XRE 300 is just fine. On mountain passes, however, you'll be wishing for more power.

To my XRE 300, I included a larger windscreen and added a comfort seat. Those made a world of difference on long highway rides. It's all about the mods!

The highway feels like my XRE 300 is a toy compared to my friend's Africa Twin. I can go twice as far on a tank of gas, so it evens out.

Surprisingly stable at highway speeds, the XRE 300. It is not as planted for a bigger bike, but it is not as twitchy as you would think.

After hours on the highway, I love how nimble the XRE 300 feels in traffic. If you try lane splitting on a big ADV bike, you will understand why we like smaller bikes.

It’s a compromise, let’s be honest. It makes you pay for the comfort of the highway with off-road agility and fuel efficiency. For me, it's worth it.

Long rides are annoying on the vibrations. I put some bar end weights and thicker grips on, which helped quite a bit.

I’ve toured around South America on my XRE 300. It’s not the most comfortable on the highways, but you know it works, and if something goes wrong, you can fix it.
