The Atto 3's wacky interior is something I love! Passengers always comment on the guitar string door pulls and the design just makes me happy. I like the car interior that doesn't take itself too seriously.

The interior is a bit gimmicky, honestly. After a few weeks, the novelty of a quirky design wore off—I just want it to be more functional. The guitar string pulls look cool, but they’re not as easy to use as regular handles.

As a designer, I love that BYD is willing to take risks with the Atto 3’s interior. It’s not perfect, by any means, but it has personality and separates the car from a sea of boring, cookie cutter SUVs. I hope they improve this approach instead of throwing it out the door in future models.

I like the quirky design, or I don’t. Great are some of the elements, like the colorful trim options. But others, like the gym inspired center console, just seem forced. I just worry it will look dated in a few years, but for now it's a fun change from the usual.

BYD, I think, missed the mark with the Atto 3’s interior. They try too hard to be different, it feels like. I’d rather have a more classic, understated design with better ergonomics. In daily use, the quirky elements are just distracting.
How does the BYD Atto 3’s official range stack up to its real-world range?
02 January 2025 06:16
The Atto 3's real world range is pretty much in line with the official figures in my experience. I get around 400km on a full charge, slightly less than the advertised range is, but consistently. It's nice to have an EV that doesn't promise the world and deliver half of it.
How does the BYD Atto 3’s official range stack up to its real-world range?

The Atto 3’s range is all over the map depending on conditions, I’ve discovered. In summer, I can easily exceed the official range, and sometimes match it. However, in winter with the heater on I am getting about 20-25% less. Something to be aware of, but it’s still enough for my needs.

I do a lot of highway driving and I've found the Atto 3's range suffers badly at higher speeds. But if I keep it to around 100 km/h I can get close to the official range. However, it falls off drastically at 120 km/h. Physics, but worth considering if you do a lot of long trips.

BYD’s range estimates are pretty conservative compared to what some other brands give you. Especially on city drives I often get better range than advertised. That’s a nice surprise, but it makes me wonder why they don’t just advertise the higher range.
How does the BYD Atto 3’s official range stack up to its real-world range?

I have been a bit disappointed with the real world range. Even with careful driving, I'm averaging about 15% less than the official figure. It's not a deal breaker but I wish BYD had been more realistic about their estimates.
Is the rotating infotainment screen on the BYD Atto 3 a game changer or a gimmick?
02 January 2025 06:16
It’s a definitely cool party trick, but I’m not sure how useful it actually is in day to day driving. I’ve had my Atto 3 for a few months now and I almost never rotate the screen. I like to show off to friends, but I’m concerned about the longevity of the mechanism.
Is the rotating infotainment screen on the BYD Atto 3 a game changer or a gimmick?

I actually love the rotating screen! For different apps it's super handy - I use portrait mode for navigation and landscape for music or when passengers want to watch videos. It's not a gimmick; it really does add versatility to the infotainment system.

As a tech enthusiast, I like BYD thinking out of the box. I start thinking, however, if this functionality brings in too much complexity, more potential for failure. I’d rather have a rock solid, responsive interface than a fancy rotating screen.
Is the rotating infotainment screen on the BYD Atto 3 a game changer or a gimmick?
02 January 2025 06:16
It’s a bit of both, I think - a gimmick that is actually useful. It's not necessary, but it does help the Atto 3 stand out among numerous rival products. It also demonstrates that BYD is prepared to experiment and innovate.
Is the rotating infotainment screen on the BYD Atto 3 a game changer or a gimmick?

I’m warming to the rotating screen. I first assumed it was just for show, but I've used it for various other situations. Now, while I am definitely glad that they made the rotation feature, I kind of wish that they had put more effort into making the UI and responsiveness of the system better.
How is the BYD Atto 3 built compared to other established brands?

The Atto 3’s build quality has been pleasantly surprising. It’s not quite premium German brand, but it’s certainly in the ballpark of mainstream Japanese and Korean cars. Interior materials are solid, the panel gaps are consistent.

Being a Toyota, I had some worries about the quality of the Atto 3. However, after six months of owning it, I have to say it’s held up really well. No rattles or squeaks and it all seems very well put together. Chinese cars are definitely being challenged by BYD.

Seriously, the Atto 3’s build quality is decent enough, but not great. There are a few minor issues I’ve noticed like incomplete panel gaps and some cheap feeling plastics lower down in the interior. For the price it’s good, but don’t expect luxury car levels of fit and finish.

I’ve been in the auto industry, and I’m impressed with what BYD has done. Considering it’s their first major global model, the Atto 3’s build quality is solid. It’s a strong foundation to build on, but there’s room for improvement.

Perhaps people are too quick to praise the Atto 3’s build quality because it’s better than what they expected from Chinese cars. Okay, but there are still some paint quality issues and some interior rattles that you don’t find in a Honda or Mazda of similar price.
