How does the BYD Atto 3’s official range stack up to its real-world range?

The range of an electric vehicle is a big selling point for many buyers, and the BYD Atto 3's official range figures have been intriguing. But as with many EVs, there’s often a disconnect between the range advertised and what owners really get in the real world. A topic that often inspires discussion about how official range tests are supposed to be accurate, the effect of driving style and conditions on EV range, how the Atto 3 stacks against the competition in terms of efficiency. The topics that the discussion often hinges on are range anxiety, are current EV ranges sufficient to fit different lifestyles, and how vital evolving the public charging infrastructure is. It also questions BYD’s range calculations and if they are better or worse than other manufacturers’ estimates. The Atto 3's range experiences from owners in various climates and driving scenarios give us a good idea of how the car performs in real life and what type of owner the car will suit.

The Atto 3's real world range is pretty much in line with the official figures in my experience. I get around 400km on a full charge, slightly less than the advertised range is, but consistently. It's nice to have an EV that doesn't promise the world and deliver half of it.

The Atto 3’s range is all over the map depending on conditions, I’ve discovered. In summer, I can easily exceed the official range, and sometimes match it. However, in winter with the heater on I am getting about 20-25% less. Something to be aware of, but it’s still enough for my needs.

I do a lot of highway driving and I've found the Atto 3's range suffers badly at higher speeds. But if I keep it to around 100 km/h I can get close to the official range. However, it falls off drastically at 120 km/h. Physics, but worth considering if you do a lot of long trips.

BYD’s range estimates are pretty conservative compared to what some other brands give you. Especially on city drives I often get better range than advertised. That’s a nice surprise, but it makes me wonder why they don’t just advertise the higher range.

I have been a bit disappointed with the real world range. Even with careful driving, I'm averaging about 15% less than the official figure. It's not a deal breaker but I wish BYD had been more realistic about their estimates.
