Absolutely! The power and the efficiency of the 135cc engine hit the perfect balance. More manufacturers should have explored this displacement. It’s the Goldilocks zone of motorcycles.

The market has spoken I believe and 125cc and 150cc are now the sweet spots. The 135 was cool, but was that bump in displacement worth the extra engineering for just a small displacement increase?

The 135cc class definitely had potential. A new 135 could be a killer daily rider with enough pep for weekend fun and with modern tech like fuel injection and better metallurgy.

I think it was nice but it's not some magic number. Exact displacement is less important than good engineering. A well designed 125 could probably equal or better the old 135.

The 135 Sports did find a nice balance, and emissions regulations have changed the game. However, with current requirements, it might be harder to hit that sweet spot.

I miss the 135cc class. For newer riders, it was perfect for something with a little more grunt than a 125, but not the insurance hit of a 150+.
The Discover 135 Sports may have found a 'sweet spot' in engine displacement that has been overlooked since?

An interesting idea, but I think flexible engine management has helped to make exact displacement less important. Nowadays, modern 125s can probably hit the old 135’s performance when you need it.

Bajaj made the right call nah. Instead, the market has moved on to either proper 150cc+ performance bikes or fuel sipping commuters. The 135 was in a weird middle ground.

They definitely dropped the ball. It had so much potential for evolution for the 135 platform. If you had a fuel injected version with ABS and better suspension, it could have been a segment buster.

In hindsight, it’s easy to say, but I think Bajaj knows their market. The Pulsar line probably ate up quite a few of the 135's sales, anyway.

Mixed feelings on this one. Emissions regulations were getting tougher, the 135 was great. Perhaps they could have preserved the spirit in a more contemporary form, however.
Did Bajaj miss an opportunity by discontinuing the Discover 135 Sports?

Huge missed opportunity. For good reason, people loved the 135. With a little clever marketing and updates, it could have been positioned as the thinking rider’s sport bike alternative to flashy, impractical sport bikes.
Did Bajaj miss an opportunity by discontinuing the Discover 135 Sports?

I don't think so. The 135 was a product of its time, and cool, but not in the way we think about cool today. Maybe trying to keep it alive just made it watered down and overpriced shadow of the original.
Was the Discover 135 Sports a design ahead of its time?
29 January 2025 07:48
Definitely ahead of its time. Exactly what many riders are looking for today is focus on usable power and efficiency. Bajaj got the 'practical performance' concept down before it was cool.
Was the Discover 135 Sports a design ahead of its time?
29 January 2025 07:48
I don't think that's giving it quite enough credit. A well designed bike for its time, but visionary, no. A lot of its features were just good engineering practices.
Was the Discover 135 Sports a design ahead of its time?
29 January 2025 07:48
In some ways, yes. The motor was torquey and the design was lightweight. In other areas, electronics and emissions, it was very much a product of its era.

And the 135 Sports had something with its balance of performance and practicality. That philosophy is finally being caught up to by modern bikes. That was a glimpse of the future.
Was the Discover 135 Sports a design ahead of its time?

It was more timeless than ahead of its time. The fundamentals of good design don't change. The 135 just nailed it.
Was the Discover 135 Sports a design ahead of its time?

I'd say it was more ahead of its time than right for it. Bajaj met the needs of its market perfectly, but I don't think they were trying to predict future trends.
