In my experience, the performance drop is not linear. I barely noticed any change the first year. Following that, however, the decline appeared to quicken. At 2 years old, hills that were once easy are a real struggle.

A lot depends on how you treat the battery, I think. I’m religious about not letting it drop below 20% and never fully charging it, and my 2 year old Jaunty still runs great. This makes a huge difference in proper battery care.

It's annoying it has a reduced range, but what really bugs me is the loss of pep. My older Jaunty really isn't as zippy as it used to be. It’s especially noticeable when you’re trying to keep up with traffic from a stop.

After 2.5 years I bit the bullet and replaced my battery. But it was expensive, and it's like having a new scooter. For me, this is a normal maintenance cost for an e vehicle.

When mine degraded faster than expected, Amo's warranty covered a partial battery replacement. In fact, their customer service was pretty good about it. Of course, worth checking your warranty terms.

Even with some degradation, my 3 year old Jaunty is still way more economical than a gas scooter. A bit inconvenient, but still cost savings.
The Amo Jaunty vs traditional gas scooters regarding long term cost?

After 2 years, I crunched the numbers and the Jaunty wins out cost wise. Gas is way more expensive than electricity, and really, the only maintenance you have to do is tire changes. Battery lifespan is the big unknown, but even with that, it's still cheaper in the long run.

Do not forget about the government incentives for EVs! In my area, the Jaunty was actually cheaper upfront than a comparable gas scooter, thanks to the subsidies. Add in the fuel savings and there's no contest.

I don't believe the savings are all that much. Sure, it's cheaper to charge than to run on gas, but the Jaunty's range is limited, so you might have to charge up more often. Good luck finding affordable parts if something breaks, out of warranty. With gas scooters, at least, there are repair shops everywhere.

What really saves you money is not having to do the oil changes, the spark plugs, all that jazz. With the Jaunty I can bypass all that boring maintenance stuff and get on with my time. It’s worth it, just for the convenience.

Depends really depends on your usage. If your daily commute is short, the Jaunty probably works out cheaper. If you need to only carry passengers occasionally or for shorter trips, gas scooters might still make more sense cost wise and in terms of practicality.

Don't forget insurance costs! Electric scooters are a lot cheaper to insure than gas models in my area. Just that saves me a chunk of change each year.

Battery degradation is the wild card. After a couple years the battery capacity can drop significantly and you might be looking at an expensive battery replacement that eats into those fuel savings. With current tech, it’s still a bit of a gamble.
Can the Amo Jaunty manage grocery runs and other errands with cargo space?
17 January 2025 07:54
Out of the box the Jaunty's storage is pretty limited. Under the seat is a small compartment that only just accommodates my helmet. That helps a ton for groceries, and I added a rear rack as well. But you just have to be careful not to overload it.
Can the Amo Jaunty manage grocery runs and other errands with cargo space?

I do grocery runs with my Jaunty all the time. There is enough space on the floorboard to wedge a couple of bags between my feet. Not ideal, but in a pinch it works. It definitely impacts the handling though.

I am honestly disappointed in the Jaunty for serious errands. The storage is limited and carrying extra weight reduces the range making it impractical for anything other than grabbing a few small items. I still do big grocery trips in my car.
Can the Amo Jaunty manage grocery runs and other errands with cargo space?

With a little bit of creativity, the Jaunty can do most errands. For smaller items I use a backpack and for bulkier stuff I added a front basket. It's not as convenient as a car, but it makes me shop more efficiently.

My biggest gripe with the Jaunty is the lack of cargo space. What I really wish Amo would offer are some official storage accessories. I’m using some generic scooter bags for now, but they aren’t a perfect fit.
Can the Amo Jaunty manage grocery runs and other errands with cargo space?

In fact, I rather like using the Jaunty for quick errands than my car. Because I know I don't have all the space in the world, I'm less tempted to overbuy and it's so much easier to park. It has definitely made me shop better.
