Volvo has discontinued the V40 model due to insufficient production capacity, with the XC40 taking priority. There are no plans for a direct replacement, and customers are being offered the XC40 or S60 instead. This move marks the end of an era for the V40, which was known for its safety features and efficient diesel engine. I think this is a significant loss for fans of the V40, but its a necessary step for Volvos strategic focus.

The Volvo V40 received a facelift in 2016, which included equipment upgrades, a more efficient diesel engine, and slightly revised styling to keep it competitive with other premium hatchbacks. The interior features polished aluminium trim and a well-made design, although the infotainment system is feeling dated. The V40s boot space is average for its class, and it has a strong safety record with features like automatic emergency braking. I believe the V40s safety features are one of its standout aspects.

The Volvo V40 is available in various trims, including the V40 Cross Country, which is a rugged, all-wheel-drive version designed for off-road use. The standard V40 models come with well-weighted steering, but the handling is not as engaging as some of its competitors like the Audi A3 or BMW 1 Series. The suspension has been softened to provide a more relaxed ride, but models with larger alloy wheels and sports suspension can feel firm on rough roads.

In terms of engines, the Volvo V40 offers a range of options, with the D2 diesel being a standout for its fuel efficiency and performance. The petrol engines, such as the T2 and T3, are also viable choices, especially for city driving, due to their quiet and smooth operation. However, the diesel engines are slightly noisier and less refined compared to some rivals.

The Volvo V40 has a strong safety record, having achieved a five-star rating in Euro NCAP crash tests. It was one of the first cars in its class to include automatic emergency braking as standard, along with seven airbags and a pedestrian airbag. While parking sensors and a reversing camera are available, they require higher trim levels. I think Volvos commitment to safety is commendable and sets a high standard.

The V40s interior materials are on par with those of BMW and Audi, with a distinctively Volvo design. However, the dashboard can be cluttered with buttons, making it take time to get used to. The cars ride quality is generally good, especially on smaller alloy wheels, but can be firm with larger wheels and sports suspension.

Despite being one of Volvos older models, the V40 still offers a comfortable and peaceful driving experience, especially on the motorway. Wind and road noise are well isolated, and the engines settle down to a distant hum at high speeds. However, the competition has moved forward, leaving the V40 somewhat behind in terms of agility and handling.

The Volvo V40 R-Design trim adds more styling elements and features like navigation, cruise control, and parking sensors, enhancing the overall package. The R-Design Pro trim further includes leather upholstery and a reversing camera. These trims offer a balance of style and practicality. I think the R-Design trims are a great option for those who want a bit more flair.

The V40s fuel economy is impressive, especially with the D2 diesel engine, which can achieve up to 78mpg. The petrol engines also offer sensible fuel economy, with the T2 and T3 models managing around 50mpg. However, real-world figures can vary from the laboratory tests.

The Volvo V40 Cross Country version is designed for off-road use, with all-wheel drive and a more rugged design. This version maintains the V40s safety and comfort features while adding capability for light off-road adventures. I believe the Cross Country is a great option for those who need a bit of versatility.
