General information and overview

The Mercedes-Benz R-Class, a discontinued 7-seater luxury MPV tailored for India, featured two key variants: R350 CDI 4Matic diesel with a 2987 cc turbo engine producing 265 bhp and 620 Nm torque, and R350 4Matic petrol with a 3496 cc V6 at 272 bhp and 350 Nm, both mated to a 7-speed automatic and standard 4Matic AWD. I highlight its long-wheelbase design for ample third-row space, fitting seven adults comfortably, plus premium touches like leather upholstery, sunroof, cruise control, rear parking sensors, alloy wheels, bi-xenon headlamps, and an in-dash CD/DVD changer with 8-inch rear screens and USB ports. Suspension combined steel springs upfront with AIRmatic self-levelling air rear for composed rides on Indian roads, though it's no off-roader. Last priced ex-showroom at ₹60.23-64.29 Lakh, available in colours like Iridium Silver and Chromite Black, it targeted families needing Mercedes luxury in MPV form—spacious, refined, and feature-packed, but weigh fuel and service costs against its peerless cabin for purchase.

The Mercedes-Benz R-Class, tailored for India as a 7-seater luxury MPV-SUV hybrid, excels in accommodating families with its long-wheelbase design offering generous legroom across three rows, fold-flat seats, and a massive 620-liter boot expandable further. I value its 3.0-liter diesel R350 CDI 4MATIC heart with 265 bhp, 620 Nm torque, and 7G-Tronic automatic for refined pulls overtaking trucks on NH highways, backed by 4MATIC AWD for monsoon grip. Built on a sturdy platform, it features air suspension for plush rides over potholes, a cockpit with COMAND system, navigation, and premium Harman Kardon audio, plus safety kit including 9 airbags and ADAPTIVE BRAKE. Available in colors like Iridium Silver, it measured 5.15m long, blending presence with maneuverability. Discontinued around 2014-2015, it remains a used gem for those needing space over flash, with diesel efficiency suiting India's fuel dynamics—perfect if I seek Mercedes badge prestige without GLS bulk, though parts availability demands trusted service networks.

Our Verdict

Expert opinion and recommendation

I find the Mercedes-Benz R-Class a compelling choice for those seeking a luxurious 7-seater MPV in India, blending grand touring comfort with Mercedes' signature refinement, though its discontinuation means sourcing used examples demands careful inspection. With the R350 CDI 4Matic diesel delivering 265 bhp from a 2987 cc engine and the petrol R350 4Matic offering 272 bhp from a 3496 cc V6 paired to a smooth 7G-Tronic automatic and 4Matic all-wheel drive, it excels in highway stability thanks to AIRmatic rear suspension and bi-xenon lamps. I appreciate the spacious cabin with leather seats, sunroof, cruise control, rear entertainment screens, and a premium audio system, making long family drives effortless. In India's diverse roads, its steel spring front and adaptive rear setup handles potholes decently, but fuel thirst and high maintenance costs make it best for buyers prioritizing prestige over economy. Used prices hover around last recorded ex-showroom figures of ₹60.23-64.29 Lakh, offering value if low-mileage units are found, but I recommend checking service history to avoid hefty repair bills on this discontinued gem—ideal for affluent families valuing space and luxury over outright SUV ruggedness.

I find the Mercedes-Benz R-Class a compelling choice for families craving luxury and versatility in India, with its spacious 7-seater layout blending MPV practicality and SUV stance seamlessly. The R350 CDI 4MATIC diesel variant stands out with its robust 3.0-liter engine delivering 265 bhp and 620 Nm of torque, paired with smooth 7-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive for confident handling on diverse Indian roads from highways to urban chaos. I appreciate the premium cabin loaded with leather seats, advanced infotainment, and safety features like multiple airbags and stability control, making long drives effortless. However, its discontinuation means sourcing used models, where I recommend thorough inspections for maintenance costs typical of Mercedes in India. Fuel efficiency hovers around 11-12 kmpl ARAI, reasonable for the segment but demanding diesel discipline for city runs. At last recorded prices, it offers strong value against rivals like Fortuner, especially if you prioritize space over outright off-road prowess. I would buy it for its unmatched comfort on family road trips across India, provided budget allows premium upkeep—it's a reliable luxury hauler that ages gracefully with care.

Latest Updates

Recent news and announcements

The Mercedes-Benz R-Class, produced from 2006 to 2012, was a unique blend of a minivan and a luxury vehicle. It offered a flexible seating arrangement, accommodating five, six, or seven passengers, and featured high-quality leather seats and woodgrain accents. Despite its luxurious features, it struggled to find a significant customer base due to its high price and the stigma associated with minivans. I think its failure was largely due to its inability to shake off the minivan image.
May 31, 2024
In its final year of production, the 2012 Mercedes-Benz R-Class saw improvements in fuel economy and power. The R350 4MATIC model featured a new 3.5-liter V6 engine, enhancing both performance and efficiency. This update aimed to attract more buyers, but ultimately, the model was discontinued. I believe these late improvements were a last-ditch effort to save a model that was already on its way out.
July 8, 2011
The 2011 Mercedes-Benz R-Class underwent a significant redesign, including an overhauled front-end styling and new interior materials. This update also introduced a standard collision-mitigation system and available rear-seat entertainment. Despite these enhancements, the R-Class continued to struggle in the market. I think the redesign was a step in the right direction, but it came too late to change public perception.
June 1, 2011
In 2010, the R-Class added several new features, including a standard collision-mitigation system and an available Class II trailer hitch. The model also offered an available rear-seat entertainment system, making it more appealing to families. However, these additions did not significantly boost sales. I believe the R-Class needed more than just feature updates to compete effectively.
January 2, 2010
The 2009 Mercedes-Benz R-Class introduced the Bluetec turbo-diesel V-6 engine, providing an alternative to the traditional gasoline engines. This model year also saw the continuation of standard all-wheel drive and the availability of a rear-seat entertainment system. Despite these offerings, the R-Class remained a niche product. I think the diesel option was a good move, but it wasnt enough to sway many buyers.

Price

Pricing details and changes

In India, the Mercedes-Benz R-Class R350 CDI 4Matic diesel carried a last recorded ex-showroom price of ₹60.23 Lakh, while the R350 4Matic petrol topped at ₹64.29 Lakh, with Delhi on-road prices reaching ₹68.74 Lakh for diesel and ₹82.59 Lakh for petrol, factoring in taxes, insurance, and registration. I view these as premium yet justified for a discontinued luxury MPV, where ex-showroom represents base cost before local levies that can add 15-25% in metros like Delhi or Mumbai, pushing ownership into the upper luxury bracket. For buying decisions, target used models under ₹40-50 Lakh depending on year and condition, as new stock vanished post-2014 discontinuation—bargain hard on platforms like CarTrade, but factor annual maintenance at ₹2-3 Lakh and resale dip. The diesel's lower ex-showroom appeals for tax savings pre-BS6, making it smarter for cost-conscious buyers; petrol suits enthusiasts chasing V6 thrill despite higher running costs. Overall, if your budget aligns post-negotiation, it delivers unmatched 7-seater opulence without modern rivals' premiums.
December 13, 2025
In India, the Mercedes-Benz R-Class R350 CDI 4MATIC diesel carried a last recorded ex-showroom price of around ₹60.23-71.68 Lakh depending on the city and variant specifics, while the petrol R350 4MATIC was priced at ₹63.13-64.29 Lakh ex-showroom. On-road prices in Delhi, factoring insurance, registration, and taxes, reached ₹68.74 Lakh for the diesel and up to ₹82.59 Lakh for petrol, reflecting high luxury duties and emissions compliance costs prevalent in metros. I view these figures as premium yet justified for the era, offering better per-seat luxury than sedans or smaller SUVs at similar outlays. Post-discontinuation, used market deals start lower, but I advise budgeting 10-15% annually for services due to imported parts—diesel variants provide stronger resale in India where fuel preferences lean that way. Compared to current rivals like GLE or Fortuner, the R-Class's pricing history underscores its positioning as a spacious family luxo-MPV, making it a smart buy in the pre-owned segment if negotiated under ₹40-50 Lakh for low-mileage units, balancing opulence with running feasibility in high-tax states.

Mileage

Fuel efficiency information

I rate the R-Class diesel at around 8-11.8 kmpl and petrol at 8.4-9.9 kmpl in India, with real-world city figures dropping to 6-8 kmpl amid traffic and highways hitting 10-12 kmpl loaded. High running costs—₹15-20/km on diesel—deter mileage-focused buyers; opt for diesel if highways dominate, but hybrids or efficient SUVs like Fortuner save more long-term.
December 13, 2025
I rate the R-Class R350 CDI 4MATIC's ARAI-certified 11.8 kmpl diesel mileage as adequate for India, delivering real-world 9-11 kmpl on highways and 7-9 kmpl in cities with gentle driving. Running costs stay manageable at ₹8-10/km on diesel, undercutting petrol's thirstier 8.4 kmpl profile—opt for diesel to ease fuel bills on long hauls, though high service needs tip total ownership over smaller SUVs; it's viable if mileage isn't your top priority.

Overview

The Mercedes R-Class is very popular among the Mercedes family because of its ample amount of space for almost the whole family and the best quality standards visible in both the exterior styling and the interior materials. The exterior of the car is adorned with a front radiator grille in chrome finish and the very powerful looking LED daylight running lights. The front and rear bumpers are designed very prominently and elegantly. The door handles and the fog lamps are also chrome finis giving a very sleek and classy look to the whole exterior.

The interior is very spacious with three rows of seating with individual seating concept. The Executive rear seats are very luxurious and a central seat can be folded. The Parktronic system helps the driver to park easily and helping to get through tight spaces. The car is loaded with first-class entertainment gadgets. The rear has 20.3 TFT color displays along with remote controls and headphones. The Harman Kardon Surround Sound provides the most outstanding sound experience to the listeners. The Thermotronic automatic climate control enables the climate control under the accessibility of the rear and front passengers. Bi-Xenon headlamps and ESP and trailer stabilization features keep the car steady and under control during any emergency situations.

Mercedes R-Class Exterior

The Mercedes R-Class is moulded systematically to gather a warm welcome and entice customers at the first glance. As Mercedes says, The R-class is indeed a powerful vehicle that seems like a jet taking off the road. On the front part comes a wide radiator grille and bright headlamps that shows a big symbol of imagination. Over the lid are high-pitched and sharp lines that run across the tapered edged lip of the car exterior. It is highlighted with strong accents of a curvy front fenders that boosts the car's alloy wheels proportionally.

Its long wheelbase comes with a wider wheel course which upshots to quality road experience while on the go. The panels below the body are compatible with fast flow of airstream beneath the chassis so there is less drag. The anterior part is quite larger compared to most vehicles in the segment but overall the Mercedes R-Class features a sleek style from the front to the back of the vehicle. The forward-facing windshield has an ideal slant angle, while the breezy roof-line lets the air current flow to preserve a streamline flow that makes its way towards the tailgate.

Mercedes R-Class Interior

Inside the Mercedes R-Class are seats that are styled ergonomically so passengers can adjust the seats according to their preference. Seats can be folded forward and unfolded without stress. The name of the game is all about space and ease. The vehicle can sear four, five, six or seven people. The second row can be seated by three passengers as it comes with a bench seat that splits 60 by 40. It comes with a pair of bucket seats too. The third-row seat for two passengers is optional for customers who want more space. There is ample legroom and headroom on the second-row seats so it can accommodate full-size passengers. The size of the middle seat is quite fair although it is not moulded enough for comfort but for extra passenger space only.

Although there are a couple of brands that offer useful second row seats for crossovers only a few offer third row comfortable seats like that offered in the Mercedes R-Class. It has abundant room to accommodate a pair of adults with ease, although the petite seat bases may not be the best when it comes to long travelling but there is enough space to move around to avoid leg cramps. The Mercedes R-Class is focused not only about style but on space. As a proof, the second and third row seats are made foldable so passengers can move it forward as flat that gives as much as 85-cubic-foot cargo space that is not much common in this segment.

This can be done by adjusting the second-row seats and center console. Extra space can be expected by those who want to carry both baggage and passengers as the Mercedes R-Class has 42.2 cubic feet of luggage space after the third row seats are folded. This means are as much room that you can expect from a hatchback. The maximum capacity when it comes to cargo space is 15.2 cubic feet, which is not bad for a size of a trunk. Looking this model gives a typical Mercedes style. The seats are covered with faux leather with a woody shade and come with gauges revamped with a sporty watch-face design. The Mercedes Command system allows the driver and the passengers to control navigation, communications and car entertainment functions. Different from other Mercedes vehicles, there is no central knob in this model.

What Mercedes R-class offers is a 5-way controller located at the right of the direction finding screen on the center pile. Using the Command system has gathered different feedback from users as some say it can be complicated while some who are used to advanced systems are able to adapt after few days of use. This vehicle comes with a lot of features when it comes to entertainment. The R-Class comes with a hard-drive installed on the navigation system which can hold up to 4 gigabytes of music files. It has an iPod-like interface plus a SIRIUS Satellite Radio so it is easy to operate. An optional Harman Kardon 7.1 surround-system is also available if customers want to enhance the sound quality and rear seat passengers can also enjoy in-car entertainment through the DVD screens installed behind the front row seats headrests.

Verdict

The Mercedes R-Class model meets the emission values according to standards and features enough space for group travellers. Although it there are a lot of improvements that critics say that should be made, it can still pass as a good car when it comes to in-car entertainment, speed and carrying loads of luggage.
