Latest Updates
Friday, 31 May 2024 12:08 PM The Mercedes-Benz R-Class, produced from 2006 to 2012, was a unique blend of a minivan and a luxury vehicle. It offered a flexible seating arrangement, accommodating five, six, or seven passengers, and featured high-quality leather seats and woodgrain accents. Despite its luxurious features, it struggled to find a significant customer base due to its high price and the stigma associated with minivans. I think its failure was largely due to its inability to shake off the minivan image.
Friday, 08 July 2011 12:36 AM In its final year of production, the 2012 Mercedes-Benz R-Class saw improvements in fuel economy and power. The R350 4MATIC model featured a new 3.5-liter V6 engine, enhancing both performance and efficiency. This update aimed to attract more buyers, but ultimately, the model was discontinued. I believe these late improvements were a last-ditch effort to save a model that was already on its way out.
Wednesday, 01 June 2011 07:10 AM The 2011 Mercedes-Benz R-Class underwent a significant redesign, including an overhauled front-end styling and new interior materials. This update also introduced a standard collision-mitigation system and available rear-seat entertainment. Despite these enhancements, the R-Class continued to struggle in the market. I think the redesign was a step in the right direction, but it came too late to change public perception.
Friday, 01 January 2010 06:19 PM In 2010, the R-Class added several new features, including a standard collision-mitigation system and an available Class II trailer hitch. The model also offered an available rear-seat entertainment system, making it more appealing to families. However, these additions did not significantly boost sales. I believe the R-Class needed more than just feature updates to compete effectively.
Tuesday, 01 September 2009 12:11 PM The 2009 Mercedes-Benz R-Class introduced the Bluetec turbo-diesel V-6 engine, providing an alternative to the traditional gasoline engines. This model year also saw the continuation of standard all-wheel drive and the availability of a rear-seat entertainment system. Despite these offerings, the R-Class remained a niche product. I think the diesel option was a good move, but it wasnt enough to sway many buyers.
Friday, 01 August 2008 05:07 PM In 2008, the R-Class offered both rear-wheel and all-wheel drive options, along with the diesel R320 CDI model. It also featured standard 18-inch wheels and side-impact and side curtain airbags. The models versatility and safety features were notable, but it still failed to gain widespread popularity. I believe the safety features were a strong point, but the overall package didnt resonate with many consumers.
Sunday, 01 July 2007 03:01 AM The 2007 Mercedes-Benz R-Class saw the introduction of the high-performance R63 AMG model and the diesel R320 CDI, which became available in the fall. The model featured a seven-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive. Despite these performance enhancements, the R-Class did not see a significant increase in sales. I think the performance models were exciting, but they didnt appeal to the broader market.
Thursday, 01 June 2006 07:17 PM When the Mercedes-Benz R-Class was first introduced in 2006, it was marketed as a Luxury MPV (Multi-Purpose Vehicle), aiming to combine the comfort of a minivan with the prestige of a Mercedes-Benz. It offered V-6 and V-8 power options and a seven-speed automatic transmission. The initial reception was mixed, setting the stage for its eventual discontinuation. I believe the concept was innovative, but it didnt align with consumer preferences at the time.

Synopsis

Overview

The Mercedes R-Class is very popular among the Mercedes family because of its ample amount of space for almost the whole family and the best quality standards visible in both the exterior styling and the interior materials. The exterior of the car is adorned with a front radiator grille in chrome finish and the very powerful looking LED daylight running lights. The front and rear bumpers are designed very prominently and elegantly. The door handles and the fog lamps are also chrome finis giving a very sleek and classy look to the whole exterior.

The interior is very spacious with three rows of seating with individual seating concept. The Executive rear seats are very luxurious and a central seat can be folded. The Parktronic system helps the driver to park easily and helping to get through tight spaces. The car is loaded with first-class entertainment gadgets. The rear has 20.3 TFT color displays along with remote controls and headphones. The Harman Kardon Surround Sound provides the most outstanding sound experience to the listeners. The Thermotronic automatic climate control enables the climate control under the accessibility of the rear and front passengers. Bi-Xenon headlamps and ESP and trailer stabilization features keep the car steady and under control during any emergency situations.

Mercedes R-Class Exterior

The Mercedes R-Class is moulded systematically to gather a warm welcome and entice customers at the first glance. As Mercedes says, The R-class is indeed a powerful vehicle that seems like a jet taking off the road. On the front part comes a wide radiator grille and bright headlamps that shows a big symbol of imagination. Over the lid are high-pitched and sharp lines that run across the tapered edged lip of the car exterior. It is highlighted with strong accents of a curvy front fenders that boosts the car's alloy wheels proportionally.

Its long wheelbase comes with a wider wheel course which upshots to quality road experience while on the go. The panels below the body are compatible with fast flow of airstream beneath the chassis so there is less drag. The anterior part is quite larger compared to most vehicles in the segment but overall the Mercedes R-Class features a sleek style from the front to the back of the vehicle. The forward-facing windshield has an ideal slant angle, while the breezy roof-line lets the air current flow to preserve a streamline flow that makes its way towards the tailgate.

Mercedes R-Class Interior

Inside the Mercedes R-Class are seats that are styled ergonomically so passengers can adjust the seats according to their preference. Seats can be folded forward and unfolded without stress. The name of the game is all about space and ease. The vehicle can sear four, five, six or seven people. The second row can be seated by three passengers as it comes with a bench seat that splits 60 by 40. It comes with a pair of bucket seats too. The third-row seat for two passengers is optional for customers who want more space. There is ample legroom and headroom on the second-row seats so it can accommodate full-size passengers. The size of the middle seat is quite fair although it is not moulded enough for comfort but for extra passenger space only.

Although there are a couple of brands that offer useful second row seats for crossovers only a few offer third row comfortable seats like that offered in the Mercedes R-Class. It has abundant room to accommodate a pair of adults with ease, although the petite seat bases may not be the best when it comes to long travelling but there is enough space to move around to avoid leg cramps. The Mercedes R-Class is focused not only about style but on space. As a proof, the second and third row seats are made foldable so passengers can move it forward as flat that gives as much as 85-cubic-foot cargo space that is not much common in this segment.

This can be done by adjusting the second-row seats and center console. Extra space can be expected by those who want to carry both baggage and passengers as the Mercedes R-Class has 42.2 cubic feet of luggage space after the third row seats are folded. This means are as much room that you can expect from a hatchback. The maximum capacity when it comes to cargo space is 15.2 cubic feet, which is not bad for a size of a trunk. Looking this model gives a typical Mercedes style. The seats are covered with faux leather with a woody shade and come with gauges revamped with a sporty watch-face design. The Mercedes Command system allows the driver and the passengers to control navigation, communications and car entertainment functions. Different from other Mercedes vehicles, there is no central knob in this model.

What Mercedes R-class offers is a 5-way controller located at the right of the direction finding screen on the center pile. Using the Command system has gathered different feedback from users as some say it can be complicated while some who are used to advanced systems are able to adapt after few days of use. This vehicle comes with a lot of features when it comes to entertainment. The R-Class comes with a hard-drive installed on the navigation system which can hold up to 4 gigabytes of music files. It has an iPod-like interface plus a SIRIUS Satellite Radio so it is easy to operate. An optional Harman Kardon 7.1 surround-system is also available if customers want to enhance the sound quality and rear seat passengers can also enjoy in-car entertainment through the DVD screens installed behind the front row seats headrests.

Verdict

The Mercedes R-Class model meets the emission values according to standards and features enough space for group travellers. Although it there are a lot of improvements that critics say that should be made, it can still pass as a good car when it comes to in-car entertainment, speed and carrying loads of luggage.
