The Mercedes-Benz M-Class, focusing on the India-specific ML 350 CDI, is a mid-size luxury SUV with a 2997cc V6 diesel engine producing 254-258 bhp and 619 Nm torque, mated to a 7-speed automatic and permanent AWD for superior grip on wet monsoon roads or highways. I appreciate its AIRMATIC air suspension adjusting heights for comfort or sportiness, spacious cabin seating five with 690-litre boot, and features like bi-xenon lights, reversing camera, Harman Kardon audio, and 5-star safety via PRE-SAFE, ESP, and seven airbags. Launched around 2012, it set benchmarks with BlueEfficiency tech cutting emissions, aggressive styling, and 225 kmph top speed. In India, it's built for premium buyers valuing refinement over outright off-road prowess, with 70-litre tank enabling 1000km+ range. Maintenance intervals suit urban lifestyles, and its blend of power, luxury, and reliability makes it a top pick for status-conscious families eyeing hassle-free ownership.
Expert opinion and recommendation
I find the Mercedes-Benz M-Class ML 350 CDI to be a commanding luxury SUV that excels in India's demanding conditions, blending potent diesel performance with unmatched refinement. With its 2987 cc engine delivering 254 bhp and 619 Nm of torque paired to a smooth 7G-Tronic automatic transmission and AWD, it surges ahead effortlessly on highways while handling urban potholes via AIRMATIC suspension. Safety stands out with PRE-SAFE, Attention Assist, and a 5-star Euro NCAP rating, making it a fortress for families. The spacious cabin wraps you in premium leather and wood, with features like ECO start-stop aiding efficiency at 14-15 kmpl ARAI. In India, where luxury SUVs face high running costs, its build quality and resale value make it a smart long-term buy over rivals, though maintenance demands Mercedes service network planning. I recommend it for those prioritizing prestige and capability without compromise—it's my top pick for discerning buyers seeking a versatile performer that turns heads and delivers joy mile after mile.
I find the Mercedes-Benz M-Class, particularly the ML 350 CDI variant, to be a commanding presence in India's luxury SUV segment, blending formidable performance with unmatched refinement that makes every drive feel special. With its 3.0-litre diesel engine delivering 258 bhp and 620 Nm of torque paired to a smooth 7G-Tronic automatic transmission and AWD, it surges ahead effortlessly on highways while tackling urban potholes with AIRMATIC suspension poise. The interior wraps me in supple leather, wood trims, and tech like Attention Assist and PRE-SAFE that prioritize safety—earning top Euro NCAP ratings. Fuel efficiency hovers around 14-15 kmpl ARAI, reasonable for its class, though real-world city runs dip to 10-12 kmpl. It's not the cheapest to maintain, but the prestige, space for five, and towing capability make it ideal for families seeking status without compromise. In a market crowded with rivals, I recommend it for those prioritizing luxury and dynamics over outright value, as its resale holds strong and it ages gracefully.

Pricing details and changes
In India, the Mercedes-Benz M-Class ML 350 CDI carried an ex-showroom price of around ₹66.97 Lakh, positioning it as a premium offering in the luxury SUV segment during its prime sales years. On-road prices typically escalated to ₹75-85 Lakh depending on the city, factoring in 12-15% road tax in metros like Delhi or Mumbai, plus insurance around ₹2-3 Lakh annually for comprehensive coverage, and registration fees. For instance, base ex-showroom started near ₹45-49 Lakh for entry variants but climbed for the ML 350 CDI top-end. I view this pricing as justified for the segment—cheaper than petrol V8 guzzlers at ₹1.5-2.3 Crore ex-showroom, yet it offered superior diesel efficiency and features. Buyers benefited from CKD assembly reducing import duties, enhancing value over CBU AMG packs adding ₹6 Lakh extra. Today, with the model phased out for GLE, used examples trade at ₹20-40 Lakh, slashing entry barriers while retaining Mercedes stature. For buying decisions, weigh financing EMIs under ₹1.2 Lakh monthly at 9% interest; it's a worthwhile investment if your annual runs justify the premium ownership experience over mass-market SUVs.
In India, the Mercedes-Benz M-Class ML 350 CDI saw ex-showroom prices around ₹66.97 lakh for the diesel automatic variant, with other trims like ML 250 CDI at ₹56.60 lakh and petrol ML 350 at ₹60.92 lakh, though top-end AMG models pushed to ₹1.52-2.31 crore. On-road prices, factoring Delhi or Mumbai taxes, insurance, and registration, typically added 12-15%, landing the ML 350 CDI at about ₹78-82 lakh—still competitive against Audi Q7 or BMW X5 at launch. I view this pricing as strategic for Mercedes, positioning it as accessible luxury without diluting badge appeal; the CKD assembly kept costs down versus full imports. For buyers, ex-showroom offers negotiation room via corporate deals, but on-road reveals true ownership cost including high insurance (₹1.5-2 lakh annually) and road tax. Resale value retains 65-70% after three years, offsetting depreciation better than most. If budget stretches to ₹80 lakh, it's a smart buy for long-term satisfaction, though fuel and service bills demand planning.
Fuel efficiency information
I rate the M-Class ML 350 CDI's 15.26 kmpl ARAI diesel mileage as respectable for its power in India, delivering real-world 11-13 kmpl highway and 8-10 city with ECO start-stop. Running costs stay manageable at ₹1.2-1.5/km on diesel, far better than petrol variants at 10 kmpl, aiding budget-conscious luxury seekers despite high service intervals.
I note the M-Class ML 350 CDI's ARAI-rated 14-15.26 kmpl diesel mileage suits India's mixed conditions, yielding 10-12 kmpl city and 14-16 highway with Eco start-stop aiding efficiency. Running costs stay manageable at ₹1.5-2/km versus petrol rivals, making it viable for high-mileage users despite premium fuel needs.

Expert Verdict
Professional reviews and expert opinions on Mercedes M-Class
Mercedes India has finally launched the much-awaited 2012 model of M-Class in India today (15th May, 2012). It is available in two variants and prices start from Rs. 59.6 lakhs. Both variants are powered by V6 diesel engine which is mated to 7-speed automatic gearbox.
Exterior
The Mercedes M-Class comes in with a third generation design that brings an optimized look. From the front bumper, roof spoiler, A-pillars, and other detailed improvements, it can be inferred that this model has been revamped to get a modern look while keeping the Mercedes touch. These improvements go to the different sections of the vehicle, from the radiator section to the joints amid the hood and the headlamps. It also includes changes in the air outlets located at the anterior side of the wheel well liners, front wheel spoilers, exterior mirror housings, the roof spoiler, and the engine compartment panel plus the aerodynamic adjusted light-alloy wheels. The Mercedes M-Class comes with a new radiator grille at the front that has been carefully positioned at the center together with the famous Mercedes star.
The new style of the headlamps packed with LED and daytime running lights has set a new mood as it comes with chrome inserts combined into the bumper. Overall, this gives the vehicle a bolder and metallic effect. At the back, the Mercedes M-Class comes with dual-part tail lights that also come with LED fiber-optic technology. It has a recessed roof with a big roof spoiler and a back bumper that highlights a new wing design. The metallic finish such as the belt line trim strip, the roof rails and the luggage partition handle, highlights the top quality adds class to the exterior. It comes with twin-spoke alloy wheels that go perfectly well with the 20-inch wheels with a classy, first-rate appeal.
Interior
The interior of the vehicle has been maximized so there is more elbow room than the earlier versions. It has 1.34 inches more space at the front and 0.98 inches at the back. The gadget board has a wood trim that stretched along the doors in a unified wrap-around effect. Car owners can choose between four different top quality wood finishes or aluminium design. The seat adjustment switches and the door handles have been made with careful craftsmanship into the adjacent trim. The middle door panels emphasize unique decorative needlework, with an exclusive look for those who want to get the optional sports package.
Engine and Gearbox
Mercedes M-Class comes with only one engine option: 2997cc diesel engine BlueEfficiency. It generates maximum power of 254 bhp at 3600 rpm with maximum torque of 619 nm at 1600 rpm. The engine is mated to 7G-tronic automatic transmission. It also features all-wheel drive with electronic traction system.
Mileage
The Mercedes M-Class’s fuel efficiency and good rating when it comes to carbon emission makes it impressive. The M-Class burns approximately 25 percent less fuel than the earlier models which was never before seen in any Mercedes-Benz’s cutting fuel consumption. The high-tech engine line-up has a CD value of 0.32 all-encompassing Blue Efficiency standards in addition to the new development gears such as the energy-transparent vehicle all play their part in delivering the good energy efficiency figures. The ML 250 BlueTEC 4Matic is predominantly exceptional in this detail. It is 28 percent more efficient than the earlier model and consumes only 6.0 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres and has a carbon emission of 158 grams per kilometre. It can run as much as 1500 kilometres with just a single tank of fuel which is absolutely amazing.
Safety Features
Along with the exciting features of the Mercedes M-Class are safety features such as ABS or anti-lock brakes that can detect when a tire is motionless after extreme pressure has been applied on the brakes. The purpose of these special brakes is to modulate the pressure to let the tire to turn and allow the driver to turn the vehicle while braking. The stability control safety feature tells if the vehicle’s handling limits have been overdone thus it will reduce engine power to help select brakes in order to prevent the driver from losing his or her control over the car. Front-impact airbags and side impact airbags have been put in place to protect the passenger and the driver’s heads safe during a frontal car crash. The overhead airbags have been added for more safety in case of a rollover or a side collision. For the lower extremities, knee airbags have been installed to prevent serious injuries that the driver and passengers may have in the event of an accident. Seat-belt pretensioners that automatically tighten have been put in place keep the occupants in the best seating position during an accident. To prevent the possibility of a whiplash injury, anti-whiplash head restraints have been added that will react to back collision forces keep the occupants' head safe. To prevent unwanted vehicle intrusion, Mercedes M-Class has been equipped with a system that anticipates disturbance and an ignition disable device which stops the car from running if the right manufacturer key is not used when starting the car.
Variants
Mercedes M-Class is available three variants: ML 350 CDI BlueEfficiency (CKD version), ML 350 CDI AMG (CBU version) and ML 250 BlueTEC. The 2012 model of Mercedes M-Class was launched in India at the 2012 Auto Expo in New Delhi in January, 2012. The first person to own this awesome SUV was none other than Farhan Akhtar.
