BMW Z4
General information and overview
The BMW Z4 M40i Pure Impulse Edition is India's most captivating rear-wheel-drive roadster, with a 2998 cc B58 twin-turbo straight-six engine delivering 335 bhp and 500 Nm through a six-speed manual or eight-speed auto, hitting 250 kmph top speed and 0-100 kmph in 4.5 seconds. Its G29 platform shares DNA with the Supra but features BMW-tuned dampers for superior suppleness over Indian roads, M Sport differential for traction, and precise steering that shines on highways and hills. The hardtop folds in 10 seconds for wind-in-hair drives, backed by 360-degree cameras and five-star safety. Inside, expect 10.25-inch digital cluster, HUD, wireless charging, dual-zone AC, and 408W Harman Kardon sound in a leather-Alcantara cabin with M seats. At 281L boot and reasonable ground clearance, it's practically usable daily despite 52L tank. Priced from Rs 87.90 lakh ex-showroom post-GST cut, it excels in fun-to-price ratio—ideal if you crave a balanced, high-engagement sports car for India's diverse roads.
The BMW Z4 M40i Pure Impulse Edition is India's most engaging open-top sports car, powered by a 2998cc twin-turbo B58 inline-six making 335 bhp and 500 Nm, paired exclusively with a six-speed manual and RWD for ultimate control. It accelerates to 100 kmph in 4.5 seconds, tops 250 kmph, with M Sport differential and adaptive suspension tuning it for ghat mastery and supple city rides. Key highlights include 19/20-inch M alloys, soft-top folding in 10 seconds, 10.25-inch digital cluster, BMW OS 7.0, HUD, 408W Harman Kardon, memory seats in Vernasca leather-Alcantara, dual-zone AC, and driver aids like 360-camera. Boot offers 281 liters, ground clearance handles potholes, and five-star safety shines. At Rs 87.90 lakh ex-showroom, it's practical yet thrilling—seven colors, low service costs, 12 kmpl mileage. I love its road presence, yaw-happy dynamics, and Supra-shared DNA refined for purists; perfect for weekend warriors seeking emotion over utility.
Expert opinion and recommendation
I find the BMW Z4 M40i Pure Impulse Edition to be the ultimate driver's roadster in India, blending razor-sharp handling with a thrilling manual gearbox that's now available here for the first time. Its shorter wheelbase and wider track deliver exceptional agility on twisty ghat roads, while the stiffer chassis and adaptive M Sport suspension ensure it grips corners with confidence, making every drive an engaging dance. Powered by the responsive B58 3.0-liter straight-six engine churning out 335 bhp and 500 Nm, it rockets from 0-100 kmph in 4.5 seconds, with no turbo lag disrupting the fun—perfect for weekend blasts from Mumbai to Lonavala. The supple suspension soaks up imperfections better than rivals, and the retractable hardtop opens in seconds for open-air thrills. Inside, M Sport seats with memory, Harman Kardon audio, and BMW OS 7.0 elevate luxury, though boot space at 281 liters limits practicality. With Euro NCAP five-star safety via M Sport differential and dynamic braking, it's a purist's delight. At this price, I recommend it wholeheartedly for enthusiasts prioritizing joy over daily usability—it's the sports car that reignites your passion for driving in India.

The 3.0-liter B58 inline-six engine pumps out 335 bhp and 500 Nm, rocketing from 0-100 kmph in 4.5 seconds with no turbo lag, and the six-speed manual's notchy, engaging shifts add that raw connection missing in autos. Top up in 10 seconds for Mumbai rains or drop it for coastal cruises, enjoying the Harman Kardon audio and leather-Alcantara seats. Euro NCAP five-stars with M Sport differential provide safety confidence. At Rs 98 lakh on-road, it's a purist's dream for buyers prioritizing fun over practicality—boot space is 281 liters, ground clearance suits our roads, and service packages start affordably. I recommend it wholeheartedly if you crave engagement that turns every drive into an event, outshining rivals in thrill factor.
Recent news and announcements
The 2024 BMW Z4 will soon be available with a six-speed manual transmission for the M40i model, a highly anticipated feature for driving enthusiasts. This manual transmission option will come with retuned steering, staggered wheels, and other performance enhancements, although it will be slightly more expensive. I think this addition will make the Z4 M40i an even more compelling choice for those who love the thrill of manual driving.
BMW has confirmed that the 2024 Z4 M40i will feature a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six engine, producing 382 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. This powerful engine, combined with the optional six-speed manual transmission, promises an exhilarating driving experience. The M40i also includes an M Differential and more aggressive suspension and tire setups.
The 2024 BMW Z4 continues to impress with its fuel efficiency, especially considering its performance capabilities. The Z4 sDrive30i achieves an EPA-estimated 25 mpg city and 33 mpg highway, while the more powerful M40i model still manages 23 mpg city and 31 mpg highway. I believe this balance of power and efficiency makes the Z4 a standout in its class.
BMWs iDrive 7 system remains in use for the 2024 Z4, which some might see as outdated but still offers intuitive use with more physical buttons. The system includes standard features like wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as navigation. I think the familiarity of this system will be a plus for many BMW loyalists.
The 2024 BMW Z4 is available in two main trim levels: the sDrive30i and the M40i. The sDrive30i comes with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 255 horsepower, while the M40i boasts a 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine with 382 horsepower. Both models offer a rear-wheel-drive configuration and a range of standard and optional features.
Pricing details and changes
In India, the BMW Z4 M40i Pure Impulse Edition starts at Rs 87.90 lakh ex-showroom after the September 2025 GST revision that slashed prices by up to Rs 5 lakh, making it more accessible for performance seekers. On-road prices vary by city: in Delhi, expect around Rs 1.02-1.05 crore including RTO, insurance, and fastag; Mumbai hits Rs 1.04-1.07 crore due to higher taxes; Bengaluru and Hyderabad hover at Rs 1.01-1.04 crore. Add-ons like extended warranty or accessories push it further, but the three-year/40,000 km service package begins at Rs 9,200, keeping maintenance reasonable for a BMW. I view this as a smart buy now—the price drop positions it competitively against pricier rivals like the Porsche 718 Boxster, offering superior straight-six punch and manual option without compromising luxury. Ex-showroom value shines with exclusive 19/20-inch M Light Alloy wheels, Vernasca leather, and advanced tech, justifying the premium. For buying decisions, factor city-specific on-road costs and negotiate dealer packages; it's a worthwhile investment for long-term thrills, as depreciation stabilizes for well-maintained examples in India's luxury market.
In India, the BMW Z4 M40i Pure Impulse Edition starts at Rs 87.90 lakh ex-showroom after the September 2025 GST cut made it Rs 5 lakh more affordable, with on-road prices hitting around Rs 98 lakh in major cities like Delhi or Mumbai, factoring insurance, RTO, and fastag—expect Rs 92-95 lakh ex-showroom for base variants up to Rs 92.60 lakh, but the manual Impulse Edition commands the top end. I see this as a smart buy now; the price drop enhances value against Porsche 718 or Audi TT, delivering superior straight-six punch and exclusivity. Running costs stay reasonable with 3-year/40,000 km service from Rs 9,200, low depreciation for BMWs in India, and resale boosted by manual rarity. For enthusiasts, the premium justifies itself—pay once for lifelong thrills, especially with fuel efficiency aiding long-term ownership. Compare on-road breakdowns: ex-showroom 87.90 lakh, road tax 8-10%, insurance 2-3 lakh, totaling 98 lakh. I advise booking soon before stocks dwindle, as this pricing positions it perfectly for impulse decisions without regret.
Fuel efficiency information
I see the Z4 M40i's 12 kmpl average in India as typical for its 335 bhp class, with city runs dipping to 8-9 kmpl in traffic and highways stretching to 14 kmpl on spirited drives. Running costs suit enthusiasts unconcerned by fuel bills—premium petrol at Rs 100/liter means Rs 8-10/km—but opt for it if performance trumps efficiency, as no hybrid rivals match its engagement.
I get around 12 kmpl overall in the Z4 M40i on Indian roads, dropping to 8-9 kmpl in sport mode on highways or 6-7 in city traffic, with a 52-liter tank for 500-600 km range. For mileage-focused buyers, it's decent for a 335 bhp roadster—beats thirstier rivals, keeps running costs under Rs 15/km at current fuel prices. Opt for EcoPro mode daily to stretch it; prioritize performance joy over efficiency for the best decision.
