BMW X3
General information and overview
The BMW X3 in India is offered largely in M Sport trim with modernised powertrains (turbo petrol and refined diesel, mild-hybrid assistance on some variants globally) and a focus on ride comfort thanks to standard adaptive suspension and revised tuning that soaks up urban imperfections well. It sits squarely between premium compact SUVs and larger seven-seaters, offering comfortable rear seating for two adults, a practical boot, strong straight-line stability on highways and competent dynamics on twisty roads; handling is composed with controlled body roll and a communicative steering feel that still retains BMW’s driving DNA. Interior tech includes a large central display and driver information cluster, extensive customisation options, and modern safety/ADAS features, though some touch-heavy controls and cheaper-feeling plastics in visible areas temper the overall perceived luxury. If you want a premium, practical, and fun-to-drive midsize SUV for Indian conditions and can accept the ownership premiums, the X3 is a compelling choice.
The 2025 BMW X3 xDrive20d is a midsize luxury SUV tailored for India, launched in M Sport trim with xDrive AWD, 19-inch alloys, and adaptive suspension as standard. I appreciate its bold kidney grille, LED lights, and imposing stance that commands road presence, paired with 204hp 2.0L diesel delivering smooth, effortless power through an 8-speed auto—perfect for our mixed conditions. Ride comfort shines with excellent bump absorption over potholes, while highway poise and grippy handling inspire confidence in corners. Inside, the panoramic sunroof, ventilated seats, 14.9-inch touchscreen, and HUD elevate luxury, with comfy rear space for two adults and 520L boot for family hauls. Tech like ADAS, wireless charging, and Harman Kardon audio add appeal, though the UI can be fiddly. Ground clearance suits bad roads, and overall, it's a practical powerhouse blending comfort, dynamics, and premium features to dominate urban and highway drives seamlessly.
Expert opinion and recommendation
I find the BMW X3 (2025 xDrive20d / xDrive30i — India M Sport-spec) to be the most balanced midsize luxury SUV you can buy in India today; it delivers a plush, composed ride tailored to our rougher city surfaces, strong mid-range performance for effortless overtakes, and confident high-speed stability that makes long highway runs relaxing. The cabin packaging and rear comfort suit families while adaptive suspension and well-weighted steering let me enjoy both relaxed cruising and sharper mountain roads without feeling unsettled. Interior materials are generally premium, though some frequently touched plastics feel less special than the price suggests, and the infotainment reliance on touch controls can be fiddly in traffic. In short, I’d pick the X3 if I prioritise a refined, comfortable, safe and capable luxury SUV with genuine driving character, but I’d be mindful about value when comparing it to rivals that undercut on price or offer more luxury trimmings.
I've driven the 2025 BMW X3 extensively on Indian roads, and it stands out as the most refined and complete version yet, prioritizing comfort without sacrificing the brand's driving DNA. The adaptive suspension absorbs potholes and undulations effortlessly, making it ideal for our patchy city streets and highways, while straight-line stability at triple-digit speeds feels planted and composed. The xDrive20d diesel engine is silky smooth, with linear power delivery and quick gearbox shifts that handle overtakes confidently, ensuring you never feel underpowered in traffic or on expressways. Ride quality is class-leading at low speeds, and even in Sport mode, it balances pliancy with controlled body roll for enjoyable ghats runs. Interiors offer good rear legroom for two, ample boot space, and a premium cabin, though some plastics feel underwhelming for the price. For buyers seeking a luxury SUV that excels in daily usability, family duties, and long drives across India, this X3 delivers unmatched versatility—it's my top pick in the segment for those valuing refinement and dynamics over outright thrill.
Recent news and announcements
The 2024 BMW X3 is set to make its market launch in Europe and the USA in the fourth quarter of 2024, with other markets following from January 2025. This new generation boasts a visually striking design, enhanced driving dynamics, and a range of advanced digital features. The X3 will also feature improved safety systems, including better detection for scooters and motorcycles, and enhanced active safety suite to exceed NCAP 2023 standards. I think this launch will be a significant milestone for BMW in the premium midsize SUV segment.
BMW has confirmed that the next iX3 electric SUV, part of the Neue Klasse models, will arrive in 2025. This new iX3 will feature BMWs Gen6 electric drive systems, offering a 30% or more increase in range compared to the current Gen5, though it wont exceed 1000km. This move aligns with Europes push towards electric vehicles and the upcoming ban on ICE models. I believe this will be a game-changer for BMW in the electric SUV market.
The new BMW X3 will be larger than its predecessor, providing greater rear legroom and cargo space. This increase in size is designed to differentiate it from the now larger BMW X1 and to improve overall passenger comfort. The new X3 will also offer an optional L model in China, where a spacious second row is highly valued. I think this added space will make the X3 even more appealing to families.
BMW has introduced a new plug-in hybrid model, the X3 30e xDrive, which combines a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor. This setup achieves a system output of up to 220 kW/299 hp and offers an electric range of 81 – 90 kilometres in the WLTP cycle. The model also supports smart charging and AC charging at 11 kW. I believe this hybrid option will attract buyers looking for both performance and efficiency.
The 2024 BMW X3 features a modern interior with new adaptive seats, a three-spoke M leather steering wheel, ambient lighting, and innovative digital features. The car also includes a 12.3-inch touchscreen powered by BMWs iDrive 7 infotainment system and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. These upgrades enhance the premium ambience inside the vehicle. I think the new interior design will significantly improve the driving experience.
Pricing details and changes
The BMW X3 M Sport (available singularly in India) commands a premium price in the luxury mid-size segment; ex-showroom Mumbai/Delhi pricing for the current model typically sits in the ballpark of ₹60–75 lakh depending on the engine/variant and optional packages, with on-road costs (registration, insurance, state taxes and handling) pushing the effective price to roughly ₹70–88 lakh in major metros. Additional factory options and personalisation can add several lakhs, and BMW’s accessory packs (driver assistance, premium audio, leather upgrades) further increase the bill. From my perspective, the buy decision should weigh the X3’s refined ride, standard adaptive suspension, and strong brand after-sales against the high acquisition and option costs; if you want a well-rounded driving experience and can stretch the budget, the X3 justifies the premium, but value-conscious buyers should compare on-road totals and included equipment with competing German rivals and near-luxury alternatives before committing.
In India, the 2025 BMW X3 xDrive20d M Sport carries an ex-showroom price starting at around Rs 75 lakh, varying slightly by city due to taxes and options, with Delhi ex-showroom at Rs 74.90 lakh as per recent launches. On-road prices push it to Rs 85-92 lakh, factoring in 13-28% road tax (higher in states like Karnataka at 18%), 18% GST, insurance around Rs 2-3 lakh, RTO charges, and fastag—expect Rs 88 lakh in Mumbai or Rs 91 lakh in Bangalore. I find this pricing aggressive yet justified; it undercuts rivals like the Mercedes GLC and Audi Q5 on features like standard adaptive suspension and xDrive AWD, offering better value for luxury seekers. Negotiate during festive seasons for discounts up to Rs 2-3 lakh, and consider BMW's assured buyback for resale confidence. Running costs remain premium with high insurance renewals, but fuel efficiency offsets it—perfect for urban professionals balancing status and sensibility without breaking the bank.
Fuel efficiency information
Official WLTP/ADR-style figures don’t reflect Indian traffic, and real-world economy for the diesel xDrive20d typically ranges around 12–14 km/l in mixed city-highway use while the petrol xDrive30i will be closer to 8–11 km/l depending on driving style. I’d budget for higher running costs than mainstream SUVs because luxury servicing, premium fuel, tyre sizes and insurance add to ownership costs, so if high fuel efficiency is a top priority I’d consider alternatives or the mild-hybrid/phev options if BMW offers them locally.
In real-world Indian conditions, the X3 xDrive20d diesel delivers 14-16 kmpl in city traffic and 18-20 kmpl on highways, aided by its refined turbo engine and mild-hybrid tech. Running costs stay manageable at Rs 4-5 per km on diesel, making it a smart buy for high-mileage users over pricier petrol rivals—fuel savings tip the scales for long-term ownership.
