General information and overview

The 2025 BMW 1 Series is a compact five-door luxury hatch tailored for India's urban landscape, powered by a punchy 1.5-litre three-cylinder mild-hybrid petrol engine producing around 170hp with boost function for brisk acceleration and reduced lag. I love its sporty exterior with adaptive LED headlights, aggressive bumpers and 120 badging, paired with a high-tech interior featuring a curved 10.25-inch digital cockpit and 10.7-inch touchscreen, ambient lighting and comfy seats. Handling shines with adaptive suspension that's smooth over bumps yet grippy in corners, well-weighted steering and quiet cabin refinement. Practicality includes decent boot space and average rear legroom for two adults, plus modern safety like matrix LEDs. At Rs 45-55 lakh ex-showroom, it's my pick for buyers wanting premium thrills in a parkable package—excellent for solo drivers or couples prioritizing drive quality over space.

The 2025 BMW 1 Series is a premium five-door hatchback tailored for India, measuring under 4.5m for easy city maneuvering while packing front-wheel-drive dynamics from its UKL2 platform. I appreciate its refreshed exterior with angular LEDs, a 3 Series-inspired grille, and optional M Sport bodykit for sporty stance. The cabin impresses with a minimalistic dash, 10.7-inch driver display, 10.3-inch touchscreen on OS 9, supportive seats, and ambient lighting, though rear space suits couples over families. The 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol mild-hybrid delivers 168 bhp and 280 Nm, paired with a seven-speed DCT for brisk 0-100kmph in under 8 seconds, smooth urban cruising, and taut handling via adaptive dampers. Key aspects include matrix LEDs, wireless Apple CarPlay, parking aids, and safety like multiple airbags, making it reliable for Indian roads. Launching in 2025, it targets enthusiasts wanting BMW thrill without SUV bulk, with strong build quality ensuring low ownership hassles.

Our Verdict

Expert opinion and recommendation

I find the 2025 BMW 1 Series to be one of the most engaging premium hatches available, delivering that signature BMW driving thrill despite its front-wheel-drive layout. In India, where city traffic and occasional highway runs define daily drives, I appreciate its responsive 1.5-litre mild-hybrid engine with boost mode that punches above its weight, offering throaty exhaust notes and minimal turbo lag in sport mode for fun cornering without compromising smoothness around town. The adaptive suspension strikes a perfect balance—firm yet composed over potholes, with well-weighted steering that inspires confidence. Inside, the curved dual screens and premium materials create a modern cockpit, though rear space is adequate rather than generous for families. It's not the quickest or most spacious, but for enthusiasts seeking value in a luxury hatch under Rs 50 lakh, I recommend it wholeheartedly over bland rivals—its handling prowess and refinement make every drive rewarding, justifying the premium for those prioritizing joy behind the wheel over outright practicality.

I find the 2025 BMW 1 Series to be a compelling premium hatchback for India, blending sharp styling with engaging dynamics that make it stand out in urban traffic and twisty roads. Its evolutionary design features a bolder kidney grille, sleeker LED headlights, and revised taillamps, giving it a fresh, aggressive look that's perfect for Indian highways. Inside, the 20.9-inch curved twin-screen setup running OS 9 delivers intuitive tech, with premium materials and ambient lighting creating a cockpit I love spending time in. Powered by the 1.5-litre petrol mild-hybrid engine producing 168 bhp, it offers responsive grunt, reduced turbo lag via the 48V system, and smooth handling from its front-wheel-drive setup with adaptive suspension—firm yet composed over potholes, ensuring confidence in corners without sacrificing comfort. For buyers seeking BMW's driving essence in a compact package under 4.5 meters, it excels against rivals like the Audi A3 Sportback, though space in the rear is average for families. At its expected launch pricing, it justifies the premium for enthusiasts prioritizing fun, refinement, and badge appeal over outright practicality, making it my top pick for a daily driver that thrills.

Recent news and announcements

BMW has announced that the new 1 Series will be available with an optional contrasting roof paint finish, a first for the brand. The car also features a dynamic design presence, highly efficient engines with 48-volt mild hybrid technology, and improved chassis technology. The interior includes the new BMW iDrive with QuickSelect and innovative digital services based on BMW Operating System 9. This new feature adds a nice touch of personalization.

The new BMW 1 Series, entering its fourth generation, has been revealed with updated styling, modern technology, and a new naming convention for gas-fed models. The car features a smaller grille and sleeker headlights, though the design has been described as somewhat bland. The interior boasts dual screens with BMW’s latest iDrive 9 infotainment system. The M135 model stands out with its turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder hybrid setup, producing 296 horsepower. I think the new design is a step forward, even if its not revolutionary.

BMW is set to revitalize its entry-level models in 2024, including the 1 Series, which will skip the usual facelift and go straight to the next generation. The new 1 Series will be slightly longer, wider, and taller than its predecessor, with a cargo capacity of 380 liters. Production is expected to start in July 2024. This move shows BMWs commitment to keeping their models fresh.
February 18, 2024
The 2024 BMW 1 Series has undergone significant changes, particularly in its interior, which now includes a Curved Display layout merging the touchscreen and digital instrument cluster. The car also features mild-hybrid technology for the first time and a redesigned front end with a smaller grille. All models use a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and front-wheel-drive. I believe this tech upgrade will make the driving experience more enjoyable.
February 18, 2024
The new BMW 1 Series has been praised for its outstanding interior quality and driving dynamics. However, it has some drawbacks, such as a small boot and a ride that is too firm. The car comes with standard equipment including heated front seats and a reversing camera, but adaptive cruise control is an expensive optional feature. I think the trade-offs are worth it for the driving experience.

Price

Pricing details and changes

In India, the 2025 BMW 1 Series starts at an ex-showroom price of around Rs 45-48 lakh for the base 118i variant, escalating to Rs 52-55 lakh for higher M Sport trims, based on current BMW pricing trends for entry-level models like the X1 at Rs 50.60 lakh. On-road prices in major cities like Delhi or Mumbai add 12-15% in taxes, registration, insurance and fastag, pushing the 118i to Rs 52-56 lakh and top variants to Rs 60-65 lakh—factor in higher RTO in metros and potential discounts during festive seasons. I view this as strong value in the premium hatch segment; you're getting BMW's tech-laden interior, mild-hybrid efficiency and dynamic chassis that rivals pricier sedans, without the depreciation hit of larger models. Compared to Audi A3 or Mercedes A-Class, which demand 10-20% more, the 1 Series offers better bang for buck for urban buyers—budget for Rs 3-4 lakh annual maintenance, but its resale holds firm, making it a smart long-term investment if you crave driving purity without breaking Rs 60 lakh on-road.

In India, the 2025 BMW 1 Series is set for a 2025 launch with ex-showroom prices expected to start around Rs 45-50 lakh for the base 118 petrol mild-hybrid variant, scaling to Rs 55-60 lakh for higher M Sport trims, based on BMW's positioning of premium hatches and import duties since it's not locally assembled. On-road prices in major cities like Delhi or Mumbai will add 12-15% for road tax, insurance, and registration, pushing the base model to Rs 52-58 lakh and top variants to Rs 65-70 lakh—figures I anticipate from current BMW pricing trends for similar imports like the 2 Series Gran Coupe. These costs reflect high localization challenges, but the value shines through with standard adaptive LEDs, 20.9-inch screens, and mild-hybrid efficiency that offsets premium fuel expenses. I see it as a smart buy for those valuing resale strength—BMW holds 70-80% value after three years—and financing options with 9-10% interest rates make EMIs manageable at Rs 80,000-90,000 monthly over five years. Compared to used 3 Series sedans, it's fresher tech at similar entry prices, though watch for waiting periods post-launch; I'd budget extra for accessories like M Sport packages to maximize appeal.

Mileage

Fuel efficiency information

In Indian conditions, I expect the 2025 BMW 1 Series' mild-hybrid 1.5-litre engine to deliver 16-18 kmpl in mixed city-highway use, aided by the electric boost reducing turbo lag and improving efficiency. Running costs stay reasonable at Rs 8-10 per km with premium fuel, lower than thirstier rivals—ideal if mileage concerns you, as it balances fun with frugality for daily commutes.
December 12, 2025
I estimate the 2025 BMW 1 Series' 1.5-litre mild-hybrid petrol at 14-16 kmpl in mixed Indian conditions, thanks to the 48V system's boost for city efficiency and reduced lag, beating non-hybrid rivals. Running costs stay reasonable at Rs 8-10 per km with premium fuel, ideal if mileage concerns you—opt for eco mode to stretch it further for smart buying.

BMW 1 Series is a 5-door hatchback coded as F20 will soon to be launched in Indian market

BMW 1 Series is a 5-door hatchback coded as F20 will soon to be launched in Indian market and will be a rear wheel drive hatchback. It has many similarities with the earlier BMW 3 series as it shares the same platform and was first unveiled in 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. It was released in International market in 2011 and is now coming to Indian market in a hope of attracting the crowd here which likes a class, luxury and brand name and not hesitant to spend some extra cash for it.

The exterior of this 1 Series 5-door hatchback grabs a lot of attention and gives a sporty and yet authentic look with its kidney shaped front grille in an upright position, extended and horizontally sectioned headlights reinforced with a little eccentric Corona rings, a little rounded windscreen at its corners where it intersects with the slightly sloping roof, long dynamic bonnet with unique lines and some 3-D effects, large wheelbase of 2690mm, an option of 5-spoke 17-inch alloy wheels with aluminium ridges or V-spoke 16/17-inch alloy wheels with high-gloss white and aluminium appearance, large rear doors and compact window areas.
