Renault is a French automobile manufacturer that was founded on February 25, 1899 with headquarters in Boulogne-Billancourt, France. It was the third biggest European automaker by production in 2011 and ninth biggest automaker by production in the world. The company has Europe as its core market and known for its role in motor sports like rallying and Formula 1. Renault entered the Indian market in 2005 with the joint venture with Mahindra and Mahindra limited to form Mahindra Renault Limited. Mahindra bought Renault's shares and so the joint-venture dissolved in February 2010. Later in March 2010, Renault India and Nissan India opened a production facility in Chennai in which each partner is entitled to half the production capacity. Renault has 16 dealerships across 9 states and 2 union territories in India as of 2011.
Renault Duster was unveiled in Geneva Motor Show in 2010 and is the third model based on the Logan platform. Initially the Duster was introduced in the ice racing version prepared for Andros Trophy and presented on November 17, 2009 for the first time. The production version was revealed to the media on December 8, 2009 and subsequently on Geneva Motor Show in March 2010. It is available in India with diesel and petrol engines with various variants as RxE, RxL and RxZ. The diesel engine makes 1461cc of displacement whereas the petrol engine makes 1598cc of displacement. The dimensions for the Renault Duster are 4315mm in length, 1822mm in width, 1695mm in height with 2673mm of wheelbase. It offers a huge ground clearance of 210mm as compared to other SUVs in this segment.
The Renault Duster uses hydraulic operated diagonal split dual circuit braking system with ventilated disc in front and drum brakes in the rear. It uses Independent McPherson strut with coil spring & anti-roll bar as front suspension and torsion beam with coil spring & anti-roll bar as rear suspension. The petrol variant uses hydraulic power assisted steering wheel whereas the diesel variants use Electro Hydraulic Power Assisted steering wheel that makes minimum turning radius of 5.2meters. The Duster petrol has a fuel tank capacity of 50 litres and it gives and average mileage of 13kmpl (on highways) and 9kmpl (in city). The Duster diesel also has a fuel tank capacity of 50 litres but it gives an average mileage of 19kmpl (on highways) and 15kmpl (in city).
The outside rear view mirrors are electrically controlled and the driver can easily position them according to his/her comfort. The rear seat is provided with central arm rest with cup holders for added comfort and convenience. The steering wheel allows tilt adjustments to attain a perfect driving position. The Renault Duster is provided with high power air conditioner with independent control rear AC for added comfort. The AC of this SUV allows heating effect in winters and also filters the pollen in the air. In addition to the 12V socket in front another 12V socket is provided in the rear for the convenience of passengers. The steering wheel and the gear knob of the SUV are leather wrapped so as to increase the grip. The Renault Duster has electronically distributed brakes with brake assist and anti-lock braking system. The SUV has two dual stage airbags located in the front which reduces the risk of fatal injuries to the driver and passenger in the event of frontal collision. This D segment SUV has also been equipped with rear parking sensors that aids in parking on tight spots.
The Duster has monocoque body which provides torsional rigidity and safety to the vehicle. The trunk room of Duster is provided with lamp and has electric controls so that it can easily be controlled through keyless entry system. Along with 2DIN music system this SUV is also provided with the MediaNav navigation system that gives the 3D as well as the bird's eye view of the location. The steering wheel has mounted controls for phone and music system. The maps on the media navigation system can also be updated using the USB storage device. The instrument cluster available in the Duster provides the ample information about the distance travelled, average speed, average fuel consumption and distance to empty. The roof rail provided in the Duster gives the SUV more sportier look.
The Renault Duster is supported by 16-inch tubeless tyres of size 215/65 R16 with steel wheels for RxE and alloy wheels for other variants. The other various security systems installed on the SUV are engine immobilizer, door ajar warning, engine protective under guard, driver seat belt reminder and adjustable height seat belts. The exteriors consists of double barrel headlamps, two tone colored bumpers, front grille surround and stylish roof rails. The interiors consists of classic black fabric seat upholstery, leather wrapped steering wheel, glossy piano black floor console finish, door trim fabric insert, door trim decorative strip and chrome finished inside door handle.
The colors available in this SUV are Metallic Woodland Brown, Metallic Fiery Red, Pearl Supreme White, Metallic Moonlight Silver, Pearl Galaxy Black and Metallic Graphite Grey. The interior harmony of Duster is also customizable with options as Premium Leather Seats, 3D Embossed Fabric Seats, Trendy Beige Fabric Seats and Classic Black Fabric seats.
